Transit at Heathrow from terminal 3 to terminal 5

We are arriving with Virgin Atlantic at terminal 3 at 5.30am and need to board a British airways flight to Venice from terminal 5 at 8.50am. Will we have to collect baggage and Can we remain airside. Cannot seem to find clear info on what to do or where to go? We are elderly and quite worried that we will miss our connection

If you have to collect baggage you will not be able to remain airside. You'll have to clear UK Immigration and Customs and then travel to T5 landside using the Heathrow Express between "Central" and T5 stations (it's free for that ride).

The trains only run every 15 minutes and the journey is about 6 minutes.

With an ontime arrival you should be okay. But if you have separate tickets remember you are carrying all the risk of missing the BA flight (and check in/bag drop) should there be a delay, including possibly having to buy a new ticket to VCE. On separate tickets you don't have a connection, just another flight that you must present yourselves for on time.

Your flight will arrive at T3 at a busy time; passport control could take from 10 - 40 minutes. Bags should be on the belt by the time you're through at immigration.

But that's where the easy bit ends. Should you, as USBT said, wish to take the free HEX to T5, you will have to walk down a fairly steep ramp from T3 Arrivals to the subway to walk to Heathrow Central. Baggage trolleys are free of charge at Heathrow, so if you plan to do this, take a trolley. There are travelators in the subway to speed the walk to Heathrow Central, but it's a solid 10 minute walk from T3 Arrivals.

There are lifts at T5 up from the HEX station directly to the departures level. You will need to stop and collect boarding passes at a self serve kiosk (there are plenty of them) and hand in luggage at a bag drop desk. You must have finished those tasks and be at T5 Security no later than 35 minutes before scheduled departure time, or you will be off loaded.

'Elderly' does not, as far as I'm concerned, mean reduced mobility, and I do not mean to presume, but if the idea of the journey from T3 to T5 on the HEX does not appeal then you may take a taxi from one terminal building to the other. Fare will be about £12 - 15, could be money well spent if you do not want to schlep across Heathrow after a long haul flight.

You've got just under three hours from scheduled arrival time to make conformance (as it's called) at T5, so if your VS flight arrives on time all should be well.

Thank you, food for thought about the taxi. How far is he taxi rank from arrivals/customs area?

You're welcome.

The taxi rank is perhaps a two minute walk from the doors out of the sterile area into the Arrivals hall. After passport control you'll go down an escalator to the baggage hall then through the green Nothing to Declare channel of Customs and through a small tax free shop.

You'll then walk through to the main arrivals area. The taxi rank is to the right, with the way out past the branches of Boots and W H Smith. You'll see a great many car service drivers holding signs for their passengers, but work your way through the masses and you should find your way without too much aggro.

Thank you so much. I think that's the way to go as mobility is a problem.
