Lufthansa 747-800 or A340-600

Hi there,

We're looking at flights to HKG next spring on Lufthansa. There are two routings via Frankfurt and Munich operated by the new 747-800 and A340-600 respectively. I'm familiar with the A340, however has anyone flown the new 748i in Economy? Any comments? I see the seating is more dense on the 747 (3-4-3) rather than 2-4-2 on the A340.

Any tips or suggestions on which to book much welcome!

I've flown the 747-8i in economy. And I don't like it. The seat mountings are skewed with respect to people's leg space, and so some pax have a seat mounting right in front of them and have to straddle it to stretch their legs. Couple that with the IFE box and it can be horrible. That also means your legs encroach into the space of the person next to you.

I haven't flown the A346 for ages so I don't know if they've put the same "new" Recaro seats on that plane as they have on the 748i. When I did fly the A340 and A330 (4 years ago) the seats were fine.

Lufthansa's soft product (flight attendant service, food, etc) is fine, but I'd avoid the 748i and any plane that has those same seats.

Great response and it confirms exactly what I feared. My worst ever flight was a Lufthansa 747, stuck in the middle of three abreast and I don't want to risk that again. Have flown A343/346 a lot recently and happy with the refurbished economy class, so will probably opt for the devil I know rather than the devil I don't.

LH is in a full retrofitting exercise to implement their new business class. I guess this also means new economy seats. The plan is 50% of the A340 will be done by the end of this year, and 22 out of 26 by the end of 2014 (source: http://boardingarea.com/onemileatatime/2013/02/13/how-to-know-whether-your-lufthansa-flight-will-feature-the-new-first-or-business-class-cabins/). According to seatguru.com, the new eco seat has a reduced pitch which corroborates USBT feedback. So depending when you fly, you might end up with the new seat anyway. And on equivalent seats, the B747-8 will be a much better option as it is a superb brand new aircraft!

I've only flown the older LH versions of both, so can't comment, but I would go for the 340 regardless because of the connection in Munich which is quite hassle free compared to Frankfurt.

Hello all. I agree, MUC generally far preferable to FRA and my first choice when I can't get an intercontinental flight from VIE. Am flying LH to Brazil on an A346 through Munich next month.

However here's what I chose regarding the 747/346 discussion above: Lufthansa Business class on the 748i to Hong Kong, returning in Thai Economy on an A380 from Thailand. Both flights are through FRA...

I refuse to fly LH in Y. Though if restricted to the choice between a 748 and a 346... the 748 wins. Newer. Better. The seats will still be nasty no matter which choice you make.

I've flown the A346 on Lufthansa to London form Frankfurt and the service was good, and their seats were amazing! But on the other hand although i did not fly it I heard great stuff about the 748. The service is as good the A346, and the new seats are actually good and different to the smaller version the 744. Although Munich airport is much easier FRA could give more shops and in general I would recommend the B748 over the A346 but both aircrafts are extraordinary.
