TravelPro or Samsonite? Need new luggage fast!

Zipper finally gave out on my luggage (Samsonite) and I'm shopping for new for a trip to Kauai for two weeks. I've narrowed it down to TravelPro T-Pro Bold or Samsonite Hyperspace. The main goal is to have something durable, identifiable (both come in good colors) at baggage claim, and easy to use. The Samsonite has spinner wheels, the TravelPro has conventional wheels. I like the looks of the latter slightly better, perhaps. Experience with either brand?

I have Travel Pro Crew 5 22" Rollaboard. For ~10 years. Expandable. With the indestructible soft sided material. Fantastic. I think they're up to Crew 8-9 now, but I have everything I need in this one. I like that the wheels are protected. The handle is sturdy when pulled up, doesn't flip flop around. I like the design of the hangered toiletries bag which can immediately go up on the bathroom door. The icing though is the handle wrap I bought that velcroes on itself. The colour and pattern allows my bag to be noticed immediately.

Ooh, great idea on the handle wrap! Will look for that. Our tags keep getting ripped off, so I've been using this garish pink ribbon with green alligators on it. Husband is not a fan, LOL!

Have no idea who this company is, but the wraps are similar to what I have and can't be missed on the carousel. They are not cushy at all, just fabric.

My travel pro has been pretty good. The handle broke after about 3 or 4 years, but it was still under warranty so was replaced for free.

I'm not a big fan of the spinner wheels. I've read several reviews that they tend to be flimsy and break more frequently since they have to stick all the way out of the bag in order to spin.

I love the spinner wheels. We have been using them exclusively for the last four years and have had no issue with them breaking. I just purchased a new Samsonite suitcase. It has the hanging toiletries bag and is an easy to identify bright pink. It was on sale on Amazon for a bit over $100. The original price was several hundred. I am enjoying it, but if I purchased again I would buy a size less than the 30". It is over-weight long before it is full and there is no point to struggle with a large piece of luggage if you only have it half full.

I buy the least expensive, easiest to identify, most undesirable looking piece of luggage I can find. I hope to get two years of wear out of it, and so far nothing we have purchased in the last seven years has died. My husband did have a bag that was completely destroyed on it's first flight, but the handle mechanism became stuck in the luggage equipment, and that just happens sometimes. I have a really ugly green suitcase that simply refuses to die or even look worn. I think I have had it for nearly nine years, and it was some no name brand from a department store.

The only reason we have to replace luggage is that our children "borrow" it when they buy too much while visiting and need an extra suitcase to get back home. Some how we never seem to see those suitcases again.

My cheap suitcase works just as well as my son-in-laws very expensive Tumi, and I never worry that someone will walk off with it before I reach the luggage carousel. No one wants a bright pink or bright green suitcase.

If you can get one, the Travel Pro Flight Crew 3 is the best, most overall durable bag I have ever owned. It´s 22¨ and easily fits into every overhead space I have ever attempted to place it in. To my knowledge it is only available in black but a simple ribbon or colored name tag will avoid confusion at baggage claim (but I very rarely check luggage).

As you're based in the US, and Washington DC to boot, you should be aware of the United carry on rules (should you fly with them) and the fact that UA is now enforcing them - tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g1-i10702-k7001563…

To that end, the T-Pro Bold 22" does meet UA's carry on rule and will fit the sizer, as long as you don't over stuff the bag. However the Samsonite Hyperspace 21" is 14.75" wide compared to UA's 14" width limit. I've measured the sizer and it is slightly bigger than the airline's maximum dimension, so the Hyperspace would probably be ok. However there's a risk involved, so make sure you're aware of that if planning to fly United, and make your choice with your eyes open.

Agree! I just want a durable, serviceable bag, not one that I'll get upset about it if gets dirty or scratched. I also agree that buying expensive luggage is inviting someone to take it!
