Flight prices between airlines, general agents, flight speci

Can any one please tell me why there is such a difference in flight prices between the airlines, the general agents and the flight specialist -

We have planned to travel to Bangkok via Sri Lanka next year and have always used a GA (general agent) but this time round the flight cost increased by £66.00 per person within a week of enquiring and returning to book, so we tried the airline and were quoted an even higher fare, a friend recommended we try dialaflight which we used before for general European flights and they had an air fare at £650.00 per person + £2.50 pp ATOL insurance - but thye had to be booked straight away and paid for in full. A few months have passed and we received an e-mail marketing offer advising us for the same flights and dates we could now pay only £609.00 per person. We fell totally ripped off and wondered why company's can do this to customers. Our tickets are e-tickets and there's no price on them. I wonder what the real cost was. any ideas ?

The fact is that there are many fare buckets in every class of travel and one agent might have tickets in a cheaper fare bucket than others and every bucket will have different conditions in terms of change or cancellation policy.

You then need to add that some 3rd party agents advertise low fares but when you come to book that low fare is no longer available and the fact that fares can, and do, change from day to day or even hour to hour.

It's not a rip off and the normal advice is buy when you see a price you're happy to pay and don't look again unless you can deal with the disappointment of seeing a lower fare which does happen.

Hi,

Agree with #1... I'll add another potential issue..

In some markets, airlines can and do enter into exclusive sales agreements with travel agents.. This means the carrier will effectively "sell" or promise to make available to that agent, a specific number of seats, and at a discount that's not available to the general public.

Once the agent gets these seats, or access to them, they in turn, sell them at a slight mark-up, but in the end, can offer a fare lower than other agents..

But I do strongly agree with #1 in that it is very, very hard, and a perhaps a misleading notion, to "fare compare" ... on a post-purchase basis -- UNLESS you are comparing the same fare BASIS to the one you have/bought.

I paid $3.35/gallon to fill my car the other day, today it's only $3.28. The oil industry is out to get me, I feel totally ripped off too!

Would you of complained if the prices went up, no you would be feeling very pleased with yourself.

Airfares go up and down all the time.

Prices fluctuate all the time, up and down. The price may well have increased and then dropped again in between you booking and the email. If they had increased would you have offered to pay more?

You booked at a price you were happy with, so why would you feel ripped off.
