Where are you coming from?

I think that you will have to ensure you have the corect VISA or other travel documents to allow you to enter the United States. If you're eligible for the visa waiver program then you will need an approved ESTA. You can apply for an ESTA online and it costs, from memory, around $14.

Thanks aussiegirl..

We will come from Europe. So we will need the ESTA. That is no problem and we will arrange it. For me is important, that will will get no problem from the airline. So could we visit NYC if we have ESTA?

"It is no problem to leave the airport and visit the town" - You are free to leave the airport and visit NY as you'll need the ESTA to simply connect in the US.

Best to ask on the NY forum for the options for whichever NY airport you are using to get into the city - just make sure you allow enough time on the return to get back to the airport, through airport security etc to catch the flight.

Yes but when you return to the airport you will have to go through passport and security checks again

The US does not have transit lounges. So, even if you layover was 15 minutes ( impossible!) you would need to have a valid ESTA or VISA --depending upon your passport. So, leaving the airport is not a big deal. If you give us your arrival and departure times we can help with plans. Is this one ticket or will you have to check your luggage at the airport. It will be either JFK or EWR since you are coming from overseas.

Just realized--i am on Air Travel not NYC--move question to NYC so more will help with specific ideas! (actually just start a new question)

At most US airports even international transit passengers need to go through immigration and customs, so you will need ESTA even if you did not plan to go into town.

The usual practice for transit passengers is that after customs there are baggage belts so that checked baggage can be at once handed over to the care of the airline if you are traveling on a single ticket.
