Extra baggage allowance Cathay Pacific

Does anyone out there know of a way of getting extra baggage allowance on Cathay Pacific/Dragonair flight to Siem Reap? I am going for charity work for 6 weeks and would like to take equipment

Call the airline. If it's needed equipment for your work, there may be some circumstances that might allow it. Only they can tell you for sure.

Only the airline could answer your question. Otherwise, extra lyggage always cost a lot of money.

It may be cheaper to send the extra luggage as freight.

Cheers.

Your idea had crossed my mind SammyAuckland. I will have to look into it but any initial idea as relative costs and times, etc? Thanks so much for replying

I've no idea of cost. I do know that freight charges are generally less thatn excess bagage charges.

Out of interest, I tried looking on line but it is a minefield of freight companies. I suggest that you ask Cathay and a few major freight company such as DHL or UPS.

Cheers.

I just got off the phone with Cathay Pacific trying to get an extra baggage fee waiver for two bags of bandages and other medical supplies from Los Angeles to The Philippines that I want to take with me for the Yolanda Typhoon victims.

They will NOT grant me a baggage fee waiver. They will only grant that to official organizations such as the Red Cross. The fee is $150.00 dollars extra per bag.

Hi,

Agreed that the best source here is the carrier itself..

It is not unheard of for an airline to waive some otherwise normal fees in those case of bonafide charity flying...

However to minimize the occurrences of fraud and/or misrepresentation it's also not uncommon for waivers to be done in advance via the carriers regional or head office and only after the proper documentation has been provided that the passenger and his/her baggage is on fact wholly for that non-profit work and not something else.

Unfortunately, I would not be surprised if they said no if you're doing this "on your own" and not as a part of a larger recognized agency who has made the travel plans on your behalf.

Best of luck

There are some companies that specialise in cheaper excess baggage. Either you drop it off or they collect it and the rate per kilo is quite reasonable. If you do a Google search of "excess baggage" and your city you might find it. Perhaps someone from your country can post their experiences of such a thing?
