USA--Manchester single flight.

Hi. Cruising to the USA next year and looking at single flights back from Orlando to Manchester. I have only been able to find flights that are dearer than a return!. Any ideas please?.

Check with your cruise line. They may have access to consolidator one way fares specifically for these situations. They won't be available directly from the airlines or published on search engines.

If not, also look at IcelandAir, who do (or have in the past) offered good one way fares. They interline from MCO with JetBlue via JFK (there's of course a stopover at Keflavik), and they also run seasonal services to Sanford.

If a one way flight is more expensive than a return ticket, then why not just buy a return ticket and only use the outbound half of it?

"If a one way flight is more expensive than a return ticket, then why not just buy a return ticket and only use the outbound half of it?" - If you consider that option then you need to know it's called throw away ticketing which is against the airlines terms & conditions - the airline in those circumstances could charge you the fare difference between the single and return ticket costs, not saying they will but they could.

Sorry but my information says that if you do not use the outward part of the ticket then the whole ticket is void and you will not be allowed to board for the return part as your booking will have been cancelled.

"my information says that if you do not use the outward part of the ticket then the whole ticket is void"

That's correct but Vicki was suggesting using the outbound part and ditching the inbound part.

What Vicki S means is that if a one-way MCO-MAN ticket is prohibitively expensive you could buy a return ticket MCO-MAN-MCO (if it is cheaper) and then not use the MAN-MCO part of the ticket.

USBT has already given the best advice, which is to ask your cruise operator.

Of course we don;t know when nana wants to do this, but I just ran some options across Kayak and Icelandair for two random dates (March 11 and June 17):

March 11 -

Virgin one way (non Stop) - $1429

Virgin round trip (throwaway ticketing) - $905

Icelandair one way (2-stops, JFK, KEF) - $470

Aer Lingus one way (1 stop, DUB) - $611

June 17 -

Virgin one way (non Stop) - $1429

Virgin round trip (throwaway ticketing) - $905

** Consolidator fare one way (non stop) - $680

Icelandair one way (2-stops, YYZ, KEF) - $498

Aer Lingus one way (1 stop, DUB) - $688

** - The consolidator fare doesn't publish the airline (you have to book it through Kayak before finding out) but from the timings it's clear that it's the Virgin flight.

So that indicates to me that there's no need to do any throwaway ticketing. There are one way options on Icelandair and Aer Lingus that are cheaper than round trip throwaways. Perfectly legal one ways from £300. They take longer and include one (EI) or two (FI) stops, but they're considerably cheaper than even a return. And, you may be able to find a consolidator one way on the non-stop for a very good price. I bet the cruise company has that consolidator fare available.

Why do people asking these sort of questions never give dates!!! So annoying.

^^^^ Perhaps because they're in the research phase of their trip? And if you find it so annoying, you can always ask them nicely for the dates if it will add value.
