Going on a 12 Hour trip, can't even manage 2 hours! Help!

So I went on a plane for 2 hours a few times, and had terrible ear ache. I then got a headache and by the time I got off the plane, I was deaf for 2 hours!

Next year I'll be going on a trip to asia and I'll be in a plane for 12 hours, but I'm really worried because I haven't been able to manage the last few journeys.

I was considering talking to my doctor about taking an anti-anxiety tablet (I have quite bad anxiety, which may be making these issues work) to help me sleep or nap, but other than that I'm not sure what to do.

Please help me out!

Thanks.

If you have anxiety issues, do you have any meds now? You've got plenty of time to learn to control your anxiety, IMO, if you get some help/therapy. Anxiety issues are real, but controllable, in my experience. You'd be better off talking to a medical professional than getting advice on a travel forum, I think.

My bf gets blocked/sore ears and ends up deaf for a few hours after flying. The normal things - chewing gum, sucking on a lolly, yawning, holding your nose and blowing etc - don't work for him at all. On our recent holiday (Melbourne to NYC) we bought some nasal drops from a local chemist for him to use on the flights which, while not getting rid of the problem completely, seemed to help and made it a lot more comfortable for him.

However....if you suffer from anxiety and believe that this only exacerbates the problem when flying then I would speak to your doctor sooner rather than later and see what options there are for you to get it under control before you fly. Anti-anxiety tablets may be the way to go but if you're not taking them now, it would be best to get used to taking them well before you travel.

Agreed about what has been said....definitely better off consulting a doctor - most people on here will tell you the same thing as well.

If you have a specific fear of flying as well, there are also classes for that too!

For anxiety, bring along stuff to read, or puzzles to do, or even songs to listen to. Keep your mind active and don't spiral in on yourself. Easier said than done, but usually effective. See your medical professional and be sure to try out the medication they provide (if any) a couple times on the ground before you fly. It isn't good getting up in the air and having issues with the meds.

I think this is more a physical problem related to the air pressure change you experience rather than anxiety, a lot people suffer from this it's known as airplane ear.

The ear is, but not the anxiety. If it was just the ear, it wouldn't matter how long the flight is as the pain will occur on decent.

It's just speculation of course, but it could be that the OP is anxious about the headache caused by the change in pressure, either way I don't see how bringing a book to read or doing a puzzle will help.......clue here is in the fact they're deaf for couple of hours after the flight.

Rather than an anxiolytic, consider asking your GP for a consult to an ENT specialist. Think back to the flights (and at other times) - do you grind or clench your teeth? Headache could be referred pain from TMJ but ultimately you need to speak to your doctor about this.

I do recommend a distractor for part of the flight, though, a book or music on which you can concentrate at cruising altitude. As to the other matters, they need to be thoroughly assessed by your GP.

I used to have no problems flying until coming back from overseas I made three flights in two days with a mild cold. By the time we were at our second last destination, coming down my ear was in so much pain I knew something was seriously wrong. A doctor at the airport confirmed I was in danger of the eardrum bursting and I needed to stay there until things decongested, which I did. Now I am paranoid about that ear.

I get special earplugs called "Earplanes" which help maintain pressure in the ears and minimise any risks. At least twenty flights later, no problems, even with a mild cold. I also use a nasal spray to decongest my nose if necessary. You can still hear OK through the Earplanes, I don't bother to take them out, but you can take them out once you're up and put them back in half an hour before landing if you wish to use earphones, for instance.

I get terrible earache when coming down on a plane and I have tried absolutely everything. The only thing that works for me personally is taking 2 normal painkillers (I use Ibuprofen) about 20 minutes before landing. This helps me a lot and have had no pain my last four flights.
