Cheapest flight US to Europe?

Hi all,

I know this is a very general question, and sorry this is a lot of info and I know you guys aren't travel agents, but I'm ready to commit to these flights and I just wanted to see if I could possibly do more searching and find a cheaper flight...

I was looking for outbound May 24, 2014 and returning June 27, 2014 (approximately). I live in Philadelphia so I could easily fly out of PHL or Newark. (I'd like to avoid JFK just because I know it is prone to delays and lots of traffic to get there.) I am pretty much open to flying anywhere in Western Europe, but our ultimate destination is Rome when we fly in so it would be best if it was accessible by train or a cheap flight connection from there. On the way back, I will definitely be flying out of London but any nearby airport is fine.

What I have right now:

Newark to Reykjavik to Paris (will train to Rome from Paris) $448

London to Reykjavik to Newark $573

All flights are on Iceland Air which I've only heard good things about and the combined price is ~$1,020. I don't mind the connections in Reykjavik (I actually want to stay over night on the way over because the city looks so beautiful) and I've heard the airport is small and easy to navigate for layovers.

So in summary - is $1,000 roundtrip from the East Coast US to Europe probably about the cheapest I will get? Some people have told me to wait for $800-900 but I am not sure the possible savings of $1-200 is worth possibly paying more later by not doing these flights?

Icelandair is good, but the equipment is below par in my opinion - narrow body B757 (Aer Lingus is another cheapie)

You're going at the most expensive time of year!!!

Nobody knows what the cheapest price will be. If you like it then buy it. There's a stickie on this forum too since this question gets asked so much, the answer is always the same.

Below par in what way? Just small/cramped or actually faulty?

Yes I know, but to get a month off from work... it had to be the slowest time of year for us (I'm in tax) so it was either that or December. I figure May/June weather would be better than December. Plus this is why I'm booking early :)

Sorry, didn't mean to repost a question that's already been posted a million times - I've just only been to Europe once (I fly domestically more regularly) so I wasn't sure what the standard price might be from East Coast to Western Europe.. thought someone might be able to say just either "yes thats the cheapest" or "no you can do better"

Icelandair narrow bodied aircraft Aer Lingus wide bodied aircraft and you will notice the difference on long haul flights plus always find the service very good

No one knows what will happen to flight prices in the future and certainly not enough to predict to within a hundred dollars. But you should wait for the next set of sales which may help. Or may not.

The newest transatlantic LCC is Norwegian Airlines. Brand new fleet of aircraft including the B787 Dreamliner widebody out of JFK via CPH (Copenhagen) with connections to Paris and other Continental airports. Prices compare to those of Icelandair, but bookings only available through March '14 as of 7/30/13.
