Package Holiday 1 party unable to travel

Hello and thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

I will keep this brief and just wanted the heads up before spending ages on hold calling Cosmos...

Ok, package holiday booked for two leaving this Thursday, one party unable to travel due to recent illness, can the other party take the flight, accomodation etc on their own and if so would it be prudent to advise the holiday company prior to checking in or does it not matter?

Never been in this situation before so have no clue if there are rules/conditions that prevent this

Thanks

You can travel based on just one occupant but do not expect to get any refunds (maybe for the flight depending on the airline involved) or insurance.

Are you on a "tour" or did you just book the trip through a travel agency. If a tour then yes tell them only one is going, otherwise don't bother unless you want to try for the flight refund.

Packages are based on number of persons generally with a minimum number i.e. two people

It might not be as simple as that, although the flight portion shouldn't be an issue many package holidays sold in the UK have supplements for single people and if 1 of the party is not travelling you might be facing additional costs.

The only people who can tell you exactly is of course Cosmos although the answer might also be set out in the terms & conditions of your package.

You might also wish to see whether cancellation is an option and claiming under your travel insurance (which I assume you have) subject to the policy conditions.

Single supplements don't apply here as the second person in the party has already paid hence the costs to the accommodation provider will actually be less (less food etc).

I would just mention at the airport that the other person on the booking cannot make it due to illness. Should not be a problem.

Why? If they already paid and arent travelling, why additional costs?

I'd like to see more details from the OP about what the holiday is, in most instances you might be better off keeping quiet, but just to be sure, ask on http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/forum/

Cosmos terms and conditions are pretty much the same as all UK tour ops. If the OP informs Cosmos that one person isn't travelling, the booking will be re-costed for the number of people that still are ie one, so if single occupancy supplements apply to that room they would be charged.

<<Where the price of your holiday depends on the number of people booked into the accommodation and someone in your party cancels, the price will be recalculated on the basis of the new number of people going. We will then send you a new Confirmation/Invoice.>>

The best thing is to say nothing, and just mention at check in that the other person won't be travelling.

Surely though that would mean a price reduction, eg one person travelling isnt going to cost more than two? Might that only apply before you have paid the full amount?

As long as the OP isn't too bothered about getting a few p back (if that's even possible) i agree seems it would be simpler to do nothing, after all there must be occasions where someone is taken ill last minute?

No it's standard whenever the cancellation occurs. A package is priced per person, based on the number of occupants, so if one cancels they lose money (how much depends on when the cancellation is done) The holiday is re costed based on the number of passengers remaining.

Anyone cancelling at this late stage wouldn't get anything back from the Tour operator. Best to advise at check in, and if the person not travelling needs a cancellation document for the insurance they would need to request a no show confirmation from the tour operator (obviously after the travel date).
