how long have airlines been charging to select seats?

just been talking about the prices of pre-booking seats, not extra leg room, just regular seats and i wondered how long it's been going on for? my kids are 18 and 21 and i know we never paid to sit together when they were younger and we were always seated together, short or long haul. the last time they both flew with us was 3 years ago and we all seated together still, have i been very lucky? i still don't pay to select a seat, take my chances

Depends on the airline.

As has been said it depends on the airline. Some who charge like BA waive the fee for those with FF status or allow free seat selection at OLCI (24 hours before departure).

Another way of keeping prices low or extracting more money from passengers depending on your point of view.

Virgin Atlantic (VS) do charge for some seats, with varying charges for extra leg room and for exit row seats. As with other airlines, payment for seat selection is still optional; checking in on line is the best way for those who have not selected seats in advance (whether paid for or not) to ensure the best choice of available seats before flying.

You didn't pay for checked luggage or food onboard back then either, things which many airlines now charge extra for. It's a different business now for better or worse.

Lots don't, but I think we saw it maybe seven years ago on some European airlines.

It's now expected on budget airlines & even sadly many full-service ones.

My favourite airlines like emirates still don't charge though, thankfully.
