When to go thru customs with domestic connection

Pardon my ignorance, but I've never done an international flight. I have an upcoming trip which takes me from SFO to Nairobi by way of EWR. The itinerary is all United, but there is a plane change in EWR to a Swiss Air flight. Will I go thru customs when I leave SFO or am I supposed to do that in-between flights in EWR? The trip is still about a month away, so I don't know any gate assignments yet. Thanks everyone!

Customs ~> interested in goods one is bringing into a country. Immigration ~> interested in who one is.

You will go through neither of those two when flying from SFO to EWR, nor will you do so on departure from EWR. If you change planes in Zurich, and if you have (presumably) booked a single ticket, you will go through neither customs nor immigration there either, as you will stay airside at all times.

You will go through immigration and customs in NBO.

Just to add:

On your way back, you will clear US Immigration and Customs in EWR between flights.
