Booked a flight from nadi, fiji to papeete, tahiti via auckland. Had an email from expedia "24hrs until your trip" so we checked our online itinerary... Depart nadi at 1120am same as original itinerary. We got to airport to find that flight no longer operates. Air New Zealand office said Expedia were notified of change in dec 2012 but they had NOT updated their system or our itinerary and had not emailed us.

Resulting in missing all flights to tahiti. Missing connecting flight to BoraBora and a night at Le Meridien at a hefty $1000/night. And spending 2 days in Auckland, NZ at our expense.

What do we think?

"What do we think?" - Some 3rd parties have a reputation for failing to notify passengers of schedule changes or the details getting lost in IT systems which is why it's always a good idea to check for changes direct with the operating airline.

yep, it pays to be proactive in this area even when u have booked directly with airlines.

flights get changed/cancelled all the time.

guess u will have to take your situation up with expedia. if u don't have good luck with the travel insurance.

Well at least the OP had the good sense to take out travel insurance. Lets hope it works out well for them.

Well at least your post is reasonable, you're not ranting, and you took out travel insurance which hopefully will cover you. But you've also learned a lesson that you should check your reservations - with the airline(s) - frequently and well in advance of your flights. Airlines generally have a poor/patchy record in informing even their direct customers, let alone your having to rely on a middleman to pass the message on.

Even if I book with a third party, I always check online with the airline to see if anything changed. The 3rd party sites never get updated in a timely fashion or sometimes at all.
