NEVER USE LIAT AIRLINE & CHEAPO INSURANCE IS INCREDIBLY BAD

well there was a series of unfortunate events resulting in my being stranded in st.croix for 6hours and missing ALL my connecting flights to aruba

LIAT assured me they would "take care of me" when I arrived in st. maarten

one should always ask what that phrase means to any person that says it

I believe it means in st croix

"you are on your own from here and we disavow any knowledge that u ever were booked as a client on our airline"

I arrived in st Maarten at 8 pm

having missed my connections and finding that all LIAT personnel were unaware of any info from st croix LIAT that they were going to " take care of me"

a very drunk full of him self expatriate managed to alienate the remaining skeleton st maarten LIAT staff and tried to imply he was representing All of us

I promptly cleared that up and told him he was being an unpleasant and unhelpful and to speak for him self

I persevered and found that they would give me a hotel room for the night and put me on waiting list (already full and with long list) for same flight tomorrow as they had some agreement with the next airline INSEL which was supposed to take me to Curacao but then I was on my own with the next airline TIARA who were to take me to aruba

eventually after about an hour of explanations

we were shuttled off to a hotel on Mullet Bay

this hotel should be renamed Hotel Purgatory

for it was full of LIAT passengers who never made their alleged flights to destinations unknown and had been waiting for days to get to another island

some certainly could have swam there by now

there was no restaurant or food and

no stores nearby acc to the front desk

which i later learned was blatantly untrue

they gave me a room where the key card was broken and told me

the front desk would call security every time i needed to get in because they were not able to get another key until Monday

as we were all starving having spent 6hours in a cold locked waiting area in st croix

LIAT shuttled us to a casino nearby to get dinner and gave us each $ 25 voucher excluding. alcohol and roulette. the food was beyond awful.

There was a tv screen the size of a garage showing a bloody boxing match

and the eating area was filled with Asian men smoking heavily watching the fight

delightful

I slept ok and went downstairs to get get a pass for the Internet that cost $12 as I had to decide what to do I was on standby for overbooked flight with long standby list

it was unlikely i was getting on that flight although I would be Able to stay in Hotel Purgatory with the other sinners

until I could find a way out

it was amazing how little anyone cared about helping you

it clearly was no ones problem and when I asked LIAT and INSEL for documentation that I had arrived late and was on the waiting list as I had travel insurance they informed me that they did not do that which is great as the Cheapo Travelex insurance requires documentation

[and is probably a subsidiary of LIAT ]

luckily I found another flight to Dominican Republic that then went to Aruba and grabbed it $264 Dutch Antilles

Hi,

Sounds like you had several things going on ther all at once... Its somewhat hard to read or follow given how its presented, but just for clarity purposes, it sounds like your insurance policy paid a total of $100.. If so, was this the aggregate policy limit or the limit on one aspect of your claim?

You paid $25 for travel insurance and you're shocked that the cover is inadequate? Some credit cards offer travel insurance, not sure if that might be an option as well?

Next time you travel, do research beforehand. Sorry you had a bad experience, but you've learned a hard lesson so hopefully you will be more pro-active next time (and yes I've seen bad reports about LIAT before).

And get your travel insurance INDEPENDENTLY of any airline. Those "buy insurance for only $xx" is yet another seduction and the airline gets commission every time someone unsuspecting clicks the "Buy" button. Research insurance policies and get one that covers all your needs for the trip, not just the flights (and those needs may/will be different to others). Insuremytrip is a good way to look for policies; that's where I start but I then go to the insurance company's website, double check, and book direct from them.

It does appear that word has magical and mystical powers that sway a lot of people away from common sense. :)

Sorry about all the problems you had but I really enjoyed reading your very entertaining account of your trip from hell and although I'm glad you managed to get another flight I would really have loved to read about what could and would have happened the next day.

For two years running our LIAT flight from Anguilla to Antigua, which should allow 5 hours to connect to the BA flight to Gatwick, has been so delayed we have had to charter an aircraft to ensure we made our connection........

I will not be making another reservation with LIAT !
