Booking w/ Orbitz

I found a great package deal on Orbitz but have never used their services before. If you have could you please tell me your experience? I would like to book with them, but when I google Orbitz reviews, all I read is doom and gloom.

Orbitz is one of the biggest 3rd party booking websites but like booking with all 3rd parties it's a risk, if there's no flight delays or cancellations it won't be a problem but if there is you'll find it difficult to get someone to sort it out for you, you only need to read all the rants here to know that it is better to book directly with the airlines and hotels.

I have used them many times with no problems.

with any third party booking agent do not expect service

use then only to book flights then go to the airline to double check and for any questions or problems that may arise.

after you have confirmation number DEAL ONLY with airline.

<<<<but when I google Orbitz reviews, all I read is doom and gloom.

Very few people hurry to the internet to post about a good, normal, everything went fine kind of trip. They post about their bad experiences.

Orbitz is a reputable site. If all flights go as planned- chances are you will have a good experience. Most issues with 3rd party sites usually stem from flight changes, cancellations, refunds, etc...

Booking direct with the airline is recommended and preferred.

With the doom and gloom, keep in mind very few people bother to post to say their booking worked fine. The only people who post are the ones who had problems and are venting or looking for advice how to solve them.

As many people will say, if possible, book with the airlines. If you have a problem, cancellation, change, dealing with Orbitz will be more difficult than dealing with the airline directly. If you can get the same fare, it is better to book with the airline. However, if Orbitz has a better price, you can decide whether booking with the airline is worth the extra cost.

Personally I've used Orbitz a number of times and never had an issue.

Do you still accrue miles no matter who you book through? Say you get a ticket thru Orbitz for a DL flight. Will you still get the miles?

Yes you get the miles on which ever airline you fly.

why would you use orbitz over buying direct with airline ?

here is one reason that I did.

I was flying to BKK wanted to fly Korean Air as they had the flights that worked best for us

but the rub was my wife was flying out 2 months before me then we were flying back together. Korean would not let me book her flights on my credit card unless I was flying at the same time.

so went thru Orbitz no problem with credit card issues and got the flight I wanted at same price

As soon as I got confirmation number I contacted Korean joined their awards program even got a free room in Inchon on our return flight because of a 9 hr layover and confirmed seats.

Theoretically you still get miles. If the flight is on the airline whose frequent flier program you are in then yes, you'll get them. However if it is a partner airline, maybe not. In my experience if the third party site has a cheap fare its usually a deep discount fare class that does not qualify for miles on partner airlines.

In your case if you are flying DL and want DL miles you'll get them. But if your flying another sky team partner airline and not DL, you may not.

It depends on the fare class if you earn points or not, and don't ask the same question in different threads.

Most airlines have wording in their frequent flyer program rules that says they don't have to give points if you buy through third parties, but this usually is only enforced with the ultra lost cost fare classes.

I booked most of my flights thru orbitz even if just using it for flights and one airline. Never had an issue with them either. One time I fly with my wife from Houston to Charlotte to Washington DC to Greensboro to Washington DC to Orlando to Charlotte to Houston.

Was going to Washington DC first for a few days and then Greensboro for a wedding and then to Orlando to visit my mom and then back home to Houston. Had no issues at all.
