Do not fly with Spirit airlines!

Do not fly with Spirit airlines!

My friends and I recently booked multiple flights with Spirit airlines via Expedia for our trip around America and the Caribbean. We thought that the airline would be similar with other well-known airlines within the USA and around the world. Upon arriving at the check-in counter we were hit with numerous hidden fees that were not adequately disclosed at the time of the booking. Firstly we were informed that a carry-on bag was not permitted on the flight unless we paid an additional $50 dollars each. Secondly, we had to pay $45 per checked bag (that had significantly lower weight restrictions than any other airline we have flown with around the world- 40 pounds or 18 kgs instead of the normal weight is 50 pounds (23 kg). Thirdly, we were required to pay an additional $25 per bag that weighed 18-23 kg. These additional hidden costs totaling $120!

The plane itself was old and dilapidated. The seats and seat pockets were falling to bits, rubbish was located in the seat pockets and the plane was not prepared for new passengers, giving an appearance that it was not well maintained. Furthermore, there was no legroom, all passengers were squished in like a can of sardines; and the airhostesses were rude and unapproachable. In fact, a passenger from another flight was permitted to board our flight! Each of our flights was also delayed by an hour.

We think that Spirit is an inadequate airline and is below airline standards around the world and should not be operating. We will never fly with them again. We are extremely disappointed with their service.

Unfortunately, that's what Spirit is. They are absolutely not similar to the big, full service USA airlines like Delta, Southwest, United, American. They're a discount budget airline that specializes in low base fares with charges for every possible add on service, including charging for carry ons. People fly them because you can find some really cheap fares, but you have to watch the add ons, and don't count on anything resembling comfort or service.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

A search using the phrase 'Spirit fees' and one further click leads here: http://www.spirit.com/optionalfees.aspx

'... a passenger from another flight was permitted to board our flight!' Not sure how that is an issue; pax connect from one flight to another all the time.

'Each of our flights was also delayed by an hour.' Delays are not necessarily a matter of X happening at airport A; the delay could have been weather-related or a knockon effect from another point downroute.

Spirit flies point to point, so your flight that departed from (eg) Dallas might have originated in Chicago, St Louis, Denver or another city. A delay at that origin city could have affected your flight.

If the planes were not air-worthy they would not be allowed to fly. Other airlines have planes that are well used and look it but ultimately reach the destinations safely, aesthetics notwithstanding.

A bit of due diligence next time could be useful for you and your friends. Here's to better luck on your next holiday.

And there we have it. In other words you did absolutely no research on the airline before you booked them. If you had gone to the Spirit website with one click you'd have seen all the bag and other fees displayed, including those enormous penalty fees for not paying in advance - http://www.spirit.com/OptionalFees.aspx

And, if you had bothered to search on this forum before booking, let alone just now and starting yet another thread, you'd have seen all the same warnings, and all the same complaints.

>> We think that Spirit is an inadequate airline and is below airline standards around the world and should not be operating. <<

Spirit is regarded as an inadequate airline; it's been downgraded to 2 star by Skytrax. And one of the reasons that it's operating, ne flourishing, is because of suckers like you who get seduced by that magic word "cheap" and just click and buy away.

TP,

I think the point being made here is that a passenger who was supposed to be on a different flight was incorrectly allowed to board OP's flight.

I am surprised you thought them comparable to the big players. Was the fact the price was so much cheaper not a slight hint that that was probably not the case? That did not spur you on to have a little look at what you were purchasing?

You can't really have thought you were paying much less for the same service as the major carriers and have everything included ie luggage? Not really?

Hate to break it to you, but there really is no such thing as Santa Claus, sorry.
