Air Transat vs. Icelandair

I am currently planning to fly from Toronto to Paris this summer on a limited budget and have found that finding a flight within my budget has been a challenge.

Right now, there are two airlines whose current one-way to Paris is less than $1,000 : Air Transat vs. Icelandair. Air Transat has a non-stop flight to Paris; Icelandair stops once in Iceland before arriving in Paris. Both airlines have their critics, but which one is better?

Any advise (i.e., such as a preference for one) would be helpful.

If you are flexible on dates, then Air Transat's will usually drop dramatically when you get close to the date. If you're not flexible, I would take direct over a plane change anyday.

Keep in mind TS is cutting capacity this summer over the Atlantic therefore you will find less of those famous last minute sell off tickets.

Given the choice, Icelandair, without hesitation. A good small airline, the chance to have a quick look (even if only from the air or windows of the terminal building) at Iceland, and an easy change at efficient KEF airport.

Because Iceland is part of Schengen you will go through immigration at KEF rather than CDG, a great advantage I think.

We got their schedule not long ago and it didn't seem much different from last summer. Maybe I paid more attention to the west flights though and so much to the east. I will check and see how much different it is. Mind you, we weren't really affected by the economy out here, so it may make sense that flights from the east have dropped.

Curious now, so will have to check.

I've always been happy with Icelandair. They are efficient, the airport is small, and the price is fair. You need to buy food on the plane, there are no free meals. We did a 2 day stopover in Reykjavik once and it was great, there is a bus to take you from Keflavik to Reykjavik.

I think you made the correct choice. On our trip to Germany last year, we stayed in Iceland for 4 nights at the Keflavik B&B. While calling this place a B&B may be a stretch, the owners and staff were very friendly, and the price was right for a family room (compared with other options). They picked us up at the airport and had a rental car waiting for us after we had rested.

Realize that Icelandic prices can be a bit shocking, but I still think it was worth it and we will be using the same route again this summer.

Good Luck!
