Read the article. He tried and was refused.

There is always FedEX overnight with insurance, probably too cheap to pay for it though.

The question is, WHEN did he try to buy a seat? My guess is that he did so after he boarded, found that the overheads were full and/or it would not fit in the first place, and found out the flight was sold out (or it was too late to process a purchase). That is a CRJ-200, so the overheads are very small and it is doubtful it would fit to begin with. Anyone's luggage is subject to being checked if it won't fit in the cabin, and his guitar is no more special than someone else's laptop.

" My guess is ..."

No need to guess - read the article.

He tried at the gate.

"While boarding in Buffalo, Schneider says he asked Delta staffers not to check in the vintage guitar—which he estimates is worth about $10,000—and allow him to carry it on the plane and place it in an available space, as he did on the flight from Portland.

I've always carried it on," Schneider, who also tours as the lead singer of the hockey-themed rock group the Zambonis, told Yahoo News. "Never been a problem before."

Schneider says he even showed them a link to a story about Congress passing the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 that made it easier for musicians to fly with their instruments—allowing them to purchase an extra seat on the plane for their fragile instruments.

But he was denied."

As for

"There is always FedEX overnight with insurance, probably too cheap to pay for it though."

An airline seat would probably cost a lot more than FedEx - which might or might not deliver the package on time.

" his guitar is no more special than someone else's laptop."

Honestly!

It's worth a lot more than most laptops, and if you are forced to gate check a bag because it's too big you always have the option of removing fragile items like laptops and keeping them in the cabin with you,
