Distance between Arrivals and Departures at Dulles

My two boys ( age 12 years) and I are flying from Maine to Orlando with a change of planes at Dulles. I assume we should not have to go through TSA again since we will be checked in Maine, How far is the departure gate from the arrival gate? We arrive at 7:55am and the next flight leaves at 8:40am. Will this give us enough time to catch the next plane? Will the attendant at the arrivals gate call departures to tell them we are coming? Any advise is appreciated.

"Arrivals" and "Departures" are at the same place. People get off the plane, and others get on the plane. :)

You can look at your flight numbers to see which gates they use at Dulles, but it's not likely they will use the same one each day. But at least look at the airport website to familiarize yourselves with the gate layouts.

It sounds like you've already purchased the tickets, so the connection time is what it is. It's shorter than I would normally book, but assuming it's all on one ticket they will get you to Orlando if you miss your connection. Hopefully.

No, the gate attendant typically cannot call the departure gate; there are thousands of people making connections at Dulles every day, so typically the flights have to leave when they're scheduled to leave. Remember, there are other people on your departing plane with connections too.

If you're on one ticket with the same airline you won't need to reclear security.

There are no set arrivsls and departure gates for each flight, you'll need to listen to the FA's listing of the connecting flight gates and refer to the inflight magazine's terminal map.

Unless there are many other passengers also making the same connection they won't hold the flight for you. 45min connections at IAD are very doable even with having to change concourses.

No. You have to be at the next gate 20 minutes prior to departure time. Later than that and your seats are likely to be given to standby passengers. Planes, especially at hubs can't take off or land whenever they please. They are assigned slots and if they miss their slot they may have to wait quite a while for another one to open for them. The airline is *not* going to threaten the onward connections of everybody else on the plane just to wait for you.

There are multiple terminals at Dulles, so while you won't have to go through security again, you might have to switch terminals. Which airlines are you flying?
