There are no customs on domestic flights.

Customs ~> information about materials and items

Immigration / passport control ~> information about the person travelling

If your fiance travelled from Windsor to Detroit he will have gone through US Immigration at Ambassador Bridge, plus or minus a few questions by US Customs depending on goods in his possession.

There is no immigration control for US domestic flights. He will have to show a government photo ID - Canadian passport or drivers license will be fine there. As long as he is in the country legally there is no problem.
