Compare NW, American, Continental

Airfares are the same for our upcoming trip. The carriers offering the same price are Northwest, American, Delta and Continental. I'm sorry, I don't know which is best. I don't care about food service or options. I just want a clean, decent flight, and one that operates on time. Have you noticed that any one of these airlines is preferable to the other?

Is Delta a bad choice because of their financial difficulties? Are they merging with NW?

Please say what you like or don't like about any of the airlines. Thank you for your input.

Impossible to say without knowing where you are going, number of stops each, location of stops, aircraft on the route, etc.

Delta is an excellent option. However, both Northwest and Continental have very rude flight attendants. American airlines delayed my baggage and my flights. but we were well compensated for the inconvenience with a 100 dollar voucher per passenger. American has friendly flight attendants and airport staff too. Avoid Northwest at all costs. they are bare bones. they did not even play a movie on my 6.5 hour flight to alaska. we also flew them to amsterdam and the flight attendant started yelling, yes YELLING at a passenger who inquired about something. I heard her over my head phone. YIKES.

I think it is hard to tar thousands of flight attendants based on the actions of just one, or a couple of stroppy ones. It's no different to saying American Airlines delays all flights without going into any detail when the reality was that it was because of deicing, which affects all airlines.

my above post is based on my personal experiences with airlines. I am not saying that all of the nw flight attendants and co flight attendants are rude. i am saying that the ones on my flights were rude. American eagle delayed my mia to nas flight for non deicing related issues. none of those 4 flights were on time.

BOS-MIA delayed because of deicing (not their fault)

MIA-NAS delayed due to weight issues and malfunctioning computer systems (their fault...yet it could happen on any airline)

NAS-MIA delayed for absolutely no reason (that we were told of) about a half hour (their fault)

MIA-BOS delayed because we had to wait for all the passengers still sitting at E9 when the flight was at D45 and no one was advised of the change. we were also delayed because about 1/4 of the plane was connecting from bolivia and that flight was delayed ( their fault)

so, yes, it can happen on any airline. that was just my personal experience. i flew american to the bahamas last year and all flights were on time and my bags got there with me. i am going to fly american airlines again because i realized that if i fly another airline it could just as easily happen on that airline.

We fly CO often, since they have a hub in Cleveland, their fares are usually the best unless compared to the "bargain" airlines. We have always had good experiences with CO and have never had anything but pleasant flight attendants.

Northwest was wonderful too. We've taken the to the deep mid west a few times. Bare bones, yes. But you did mention that's not important to you. It was one of the cleanest planes I've been on in a long time.

No matter which airline you shop, watch new policies like charging for baggage and limiting carry on sizes to even smaller dimensions than used to be customary.

If the flights you're considering are not non-stop, look into that too. There's a difference between non-stop and a direct flight.

Depends on where you are going, how long your flight is, if you have to connect, etc. It really does make a difference.

I prefer American and Continental generally, but truthfully, there is not a huge difference among them.

My personal favorite of these has to be Continental. Of course, they're my first choice for earning FF miles as well, so I may be a bit biased.

Here are some of my personal experiences on each of the airlines:

Delta - took over 12 hours from Denver to Reno this past January (supposed to be a 5 hour flight including stop in SLC). There was bad weather in Salt Lake City, and the airport closed for about 45 minutes. Delays are expected, but that is no excuse to cause 5+ hour delays for all their flights that afternoon. Also, 2 of us were placed on a moderately earlier flight - we were told there were 4 seats available. We get to the plane, and find it completely full. Now they don't even know how many passengers are on their planes?

Northwest and American. Both have lost my luggage a number of times. Each time it took at least 24 hours to return it to me. The last time Northwest lost my bag, not only could they not find it, they were not allowed to give me the telephone number to the local airport's baggage office.

Continental. They lost my bags once, but in a remembered instance of good service, actually put my bags on an American flight so it could get to me about 6 hours sooner. I have had good service almost every time from Continental.

Everyone's experience will differ however!
