I found a house in west Los Angeles (Culver City) which would be perfect for my family of 9 who is coming to visit me from another country. The house has 4 bedrooms and is owned by an older man. The house is $2,000 per week, plus $250 cleaning fee and $500 deposit.
My family decided on the house and now we're not sure how to proceed. Can there be a scam even though I saw the house and met the person renting it out? I've heard so many stories and I just don't want to put my family through something that is not a economically safe.
He wants to sign a contract, and seemed completely legitimate. But then he asked for all the money up front, which made me hesitate. I get that he need some kind of insurance that they are going to show up, but to pay $7,000 up front seems a little much before getting any keys? Or is this common?
Please help me, I feel like it is my responsibility to make sure they get what they want and don't get scammed. Any answer or opinion is appreciated. Thank you!
