"When we arrived at the original Jo-Jo's (not to be confused with Jo-Jo's Clubhouse shave ice, down the road) it was hard to tell if they were even open, but thankfully they were. There was only one person working so it was a bit of a wait but it was worth it. I had lilikoi (passion fruit) and mango ..."with a scoop of mac nut ice-cream and it was heaven on a hot day. The flavors I ordered were supposed to be a combo with guava but guava, among a few others, was out that day. The end product was delicious so I didn't care.
The ice was perfectly fluffy and light. If you haven't had Hawaiian shave ice, please try it. It's nothing like the chunky, solidified snow cones you get on the mainland. Prices are reasonable and if you head out around the corner, there is a little beachy park area with picnic benches where you can sit and enjoy your treat.
This place is a little rough around the edges but the shave ice can't be beat.

"After a bad experience ziplining during the afternoon (Hilo), and driving in a horrific rain, we figured we would at least attempt to have a nice meal before returning to our hotel. What a nice surprise. We will be back there on our next stay on the Big Island. We were seated promptly, greeted wa..."rmly and had a knowledgeable waitress. My wife was in the mood for a filet, while I was in the mood for fish. While my Ono was superb, the filet was one of the best I ever tasted. Most of the meat at Merriman's is big island beef. They had run out of it, but still whoever is their provider and whoever the chef who prepared it... kudo's. Only suggestion is to work on the desert menu. It was the humdrum that everyone else served. Once you have had one macadamia nut pie or creme burlee (?) you have had enough.

"My husband and I had dinner in early May and it was excellent..Only a twenty minute drive from the hotels on the Kohala Coast and very easy to find. Worth traveling to Waimea just to see the topography which is so different from the coast, The outside of the restaurant is deceptive as it is in a ..."shopping plaza and doesn't look like much, but the interior is comfortable in a simple, charming way.. We split an appetizer of cavatelli pasta with ricotta cheese, asparagus and macadamia pesto- delicious (wish I had some right now!). For my entree, I had a local fish special which was quite good and my husband had lamb which he enjoyed. We had a panacotta dessert, gratis for my birthday which was also tasty. We were too full to try another dessert, but they all looked great. Service was very professional and the ingredients fresh and local. We plan to return again.
