I've been here upward of half a dozen times now and every time have had consistent, natural, great service from the young team, along with the only time I have ever been able to cut venison with a table knife (tender and tasty!). Great food, friendly, casual service from a team that genuinely care. Give it a go, best table... More

All three courses were excellent! Just One point (but very small) would be great once seated to have the waiter of table to outline specials or soup of the day. Good choice of courses (but not too much choice which I find confusing and most of the time dilutes the quality of the food) and presentation was excellent alongside well... More

Wonderful food and drink and friendly, knowledgable service makes this pub a must-visit if you're ever in the area. I fully intend to go back! Also, a hat tip to the ever-reliable Alastair Sawday (or his app, at least) - we've found so many hidden gems such as this one by following his advice.

I walked here from Berkhamsted with two girlfriends, having booked a table & was very pleased we had! The menu was fabulous, so much to choose from, really struggled to decide, so we all shared our chosen dishes & were not disappointed. The food was everything we had hoped for & the service could not be faulted.. You will not... More

My only problem with this restaurant is finding it .. Once I do I don't want to leave ! The bubble and squeak dish is the best ever .. a real treat ..my wife loves the ambience of this hidden gem .. It is very popular locally and I would recommend booking early , their game dishes are particularly popular... More

IF YOU PARK ON THE ROAD, YOUR CAR WILL GET SCRAPED. It's not rocket science. If you do this thing called walking and park a bit further away (BUT NOT IN ANYONES DRIVEWAY) Then you can enjoy the lovely nature experience more and not slow down your car and make EVERYONE LATE! Ps. The actual pub is really nice, love... More

The title of this review pretty much sums it up. The first time I visited this pub was at the beginning of August, when I took my friend out for a 40th birthday lunch. The weather was warm enough to sit outside in the garden area at the front of the pub. Both then and when I made a reservation... More

My wife and I went for lunch here with friends and it was as bad as the last time!!! The service is just plain BAD and the staff do not seem to care! My wife's soup was served just warm and the bread was dry and stale. The fritter she had was awful and my food was not much better.... More

There always seem to be plenty of stylish, laid back but excellent pub restaurants in such places as Wiltshire and Dorset but Hertfordshire's offerings tend to the chain style, trying too hard side of design and feel. The Alford Arms would be at home anywhere and never fails to induce relaxation and satisfaction in all respects.
