Description: Bridging the gap between country inn & local restaurant, The White Oaks has established itself as a local favourite. The White Oak is an independent and contemporary 'Gastro Pub' where the kitchen & service sets out to please, & covers all bases from pata negra ham & goats chees and walnut salads to chicken liver parfait & their signature roast chicken ravioli. For mains lots of fresh fish features including Whole Lemon sole, whole Dover Sole and Hake as well as the Suckling Pig Belly to share & daily made pies along with Aubrey Allen British Highland free-range steaks. If that's not enough the desserts tend to be classic but executed very well including creme Brulee, pannacotta and excellent brioche donuts. Set menus also offer decent value (£14/16 for two/three courses at lunch and £19/21 at dinner) running alongside the A la Carte menu. The traditional Roasts is served on Sundays alongside the A La Carte. There's also plenty of good drinking on the Corney & Barrow wine list (look for Delamotte Grand Cru Champagne, Archaval-Ferrer Malbec, & 'Psi' Tempanillo from Michael Sisseck) and a barter bin where you haggle for top end clarets (one has 98 parker points!). The dining room's taupe shades, thick pine beams, cream chandeliers and widely spaced, bare tables match the food's smart, unfussy tone, while warm, engaging staff and a compact, broadly priced wine list also fit the bill.

Well kitted out pub in a Dallas kind of way. Food is superb, Wine list ok ( pricey) staff are estranged at times but well meaning. Still we like it here a lot.

We have been here several times and the food and service are always brilliant. we have our preferred table and the staff usually manage to find a way to fit us in without upsetting anyone else. last time the place was full of Christmas parties which of course were loud and attention seeking but we were still treated as well... Went here for the first time for a Thursday lunch. Very friendly welcome, courteous, attentive and always helpful. Menu is limited to give or six choices per course- a good thing in my mind and the wine list is varied and interesting. Fish cakes were good. Rib eye main was succulent though I would say pepper sauce was a touch... More

The food in this delightful restaurant was brilliant and the staff were excellent. Firstly the staff. When questions were raised about ingredients and allergies they came back with information speedily and they always looked to find solutions for those with food allergies. Now the food. Adam Hague the Head Chef should be applauded for a menu that is interesting and... More

We went as a family of 6 (which included a 3 year old) for a special birthday occasion lunch. The staff were really nice and friendly and brought colouring things for my daughter to use to keep her occupied which was nice. The menu was good for meat eaters but poor for vegetarians. I only had a main of sage,... More

I can't imagine how annoying it is to be serving a large table of people who are slightly inebriated, not really paying attention and are getting increasingly loud. Yes, reader, I was one of that group - but the staff were amazing in their patience, grace and attention to detail. On top of that, we had exceptional food - really... More

Second visit for Sunday lunch & impressed again. Couldn't get a table until 3.45 but worth the wait. Good selection of starters & mains, my honeyed parsnip soup with just the right hint of curry was delicious. Roast pork came with a Yorkshire pud which was slightly odd & the amount of meat was a little stingy but it was... More

We had lunch with the family including two young kids at The White Oak on Saturday. The staff could not have been more considerate to all of our needs and happily dismissed the sometimes less than perfect behaviour of our grandchildren. The menu included not only a good cross section of all the usual items but also a number of... More

Had lunch with a business colleague a couple weeks ago and am happy to report that The White Oak is still operating at the top of its game. Food was excellent, so good it surprised my guest who didn't know what to expect. The service is also very attentive and they judged that we were talking business so didn't intrude... More
