Well worth the detour

Stopped off early Saturday evening for a meal. Initially disappointed to be told that they had had a busy day and ALL the pies (for which they are reportedly famous), and some of the specials were off, however there was still enough choice on the reduced menu. This was the only moan. From the... read more

Ian, the owner / manger was so friendly, the food looked surperb but sadly we were pre booked elsewhere. A tiny cosy bar, excellent beer and a really sexy bar maid (might be Ians wife, if not marry her... Just need an excuse to go back as I live 2000 miles away. Proper pub x

Popped in by chance, desperate for a quick drink/snack and a loo-stop, wow, what a great little pub! The staff were really friendly and knew their products well, the pub itself is a delightful old building with a beer garden out the back, bar and dining room inside. Having had a ½ pint and snack I was disappointed that the... More

My wife and I called in for an evening meal. We both had rump steak and were delighted with it (plus the super chips). All the staff were really friendly and helpful. This is proper pub food at its best.

Just had a lovely juicy steak, huge portions gorgeous homemade coleslaw and hand cut chunky chips. Had it with pepper sauce. The steak came with all the trimmings including the sauce at no extra cost and we had homemade treacle sponge with big sticky days in for dessert which was to die for. They serve lovely local real ales and... More

We popped into this pub recently for lunch as we were in the area. We received a very warm and friendly welcome from the host and were ushered into the lounge by the fire. Lunch, good honest pub grub, and drinks were served with a smile and delicious. I would go here again given the chance.

Called in at the Royal Oak after a long day needing some rest and good food. We were warmly welcomed and quickly wrapped ourselves around a table in the lounge with, in my case, a welcome pint of Copper Dragon's best. There is a compact menu, but the emphasis is on providing decent pub grub at a good price. (Tuesday... More

Four of us spent a great evening here. The pub itself is very cosy with traditional style decor and a lovely open fire. There is a good selection of beers and wine and the menu offers good, home cooked food. All our meals were delicious and the beer (Copper Dragon) went down a treat. The visit was topped off by... Stopped in last week for lunch with my wife and 6 year old daughter. Wow. I loved it. Decor, ambience, history, log fire, fine ale, good food, dog friendly, welcoming host and locals. Possibly the best pub in the world. I will return some day, I just wish It was in my village...
