Home cooking, friendly service. Comfortable surroundings. Not much else in the area so a welcome break.

We were heading for Uig and the museum where the Lewis Chessmen were found and, it seemed, had been driving forever. Desparate for some sort of refreshment we were becoming despondent when we came across the coffee shop. The building was originally the local school and the eating area was one of the classrooms - which gives you an idea... More

You will find this quirky establishment on the B8011 in the district of Uig, on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. This probably therefore is not a road you are driving on by chance. Even the people living on the Islands regard Uig as being remote. Accordingly finding anywhere that is willing to provide a hot meal to... More

We stopped in for an early evening meal on the off chance. Our food appeared pretty quickly and I'm sure it had been cooked before and reheated. The baked potato I was given was completely mushy and unappetising. The lady who served us was very friendly though and the place does have a sort of quaint charm.

We had a lovely lunch here and went back the same evening for a fantastic home cooked 4 course dinner. Caters well for vegetarians and meat/fish eaters alike. 5 star service for dinner, we loved it.

We stopped here having seen the sign indicating food BUT, at 11 o'clock were unable to raise anyone despite calling out. There were dirty plates, cups and saucers still on the tables which is sufficient to dissuade potential customers.

Dear Andrew, Apologies that my signs seem to have misled you. The ‘food’ sign a mile away from the building does not show my opening times, but the sign in my car park shows that I don’t actually open until 12 noon. However, as Loch Croistean is my home as well as my business, my front door is open before... More

As other reviewers have said, this is a wonderfully warm, relaxing and welcoming coffee stop. The owner is delightful and friendly and we loved chatting to her and her mum when we dropped in. Scrummy home made cakes and a wonderful home cooked, simple evening meal offer. We had booked for this but had to cancel as we needed to... More

A cozy, converted school room with comfy sofas to sink into, rustic furniture and plenty of books and games. What more could you want? How about delicious home cooked food made to order and a friendly owner. We had a pot of tea, baked potatoes, mince and sticky toffee pudding to die for. Look for the "Food 1 Mile" sign... More

Like others, we noticed the 'food in one mile' sign just as we were getting peckish on our way to Uighur sands. We popped in and enjoyed the homely atmosphere of the old school room. The soup was tasty and the highland beef casserole delicious..so I was told..I had a baked potato. The home baking finished the meal off well.
