A real favourite - an authentic English pub.

We had a great family Sunday lunch. The atmosphere was great and the traditional roast lunch delicious. This was not our first visit and it won't be the last.

Having eaten well here before we asked if The Bell could do a large dinner for a 50th Birthday, which they duly did. The pub gave us the use of their function room - an upstairs dining room that is lined with paintings for sale and has amazing views out over the Blackwater estuary as far as Bradwell on Sea.... Hadn't been to this pub for about 6 years, at which time it was serving microwaved pies and chips. Things have certainly changed since our last visit!! We went for Sunday lunch having read some excellent TA reviews. The food was superb, the service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was great. All in all a lovely old country... More

We only popped in for a sandwich lunch today having eaten here before and been really impressed. It was surprisingly full and busy but we got a table straight away. Our food came very quickly - smoked salmon sandwiches in warm ciabatta with THE BEST home cooked chips.Good guest beer too. Service is very friendly and efficient. Will be back... More

Arrived here for lunch at 2pm when lunch service ends, but very happy to serve us. Delicious food, liver and bacon with mash for my husband and ratatouille tart with goats cheese for me. Friendly helpful staff and an art exhibition upstairs. Had been recommended and didn't disappoint.

A wonderful place in a quiet village. A warm and homely friendly welcome, Landlords and staff are lovely people. Food is first class. Highly recommend. A must to anyone passing through or holidaying in this lovely area. I return here each week I'm in Essex

excellent food, very varied menu with some unusual dishes as well. Didn't have a booking but they "squeezed" us in. No fuss, no bother. Service was prompt but not hurried or rushed. Staff were very nice and friendly. We all had different meals and they were all delicious, can honestly say it was the best I've eaten in a pub.... More

Maybe our 5th or sixth visit in the last year or so which I suppose says something on it's own. We have a sort of circuit of Essex pubs we visit and finding this one at the recommendation of our daughter was a pleasant addition to the list. The food has always come from a nicely varied menu with the... More

So very welcoming, fantastic food, great selection of wines and ales, amazingly scrummy desserts all homemade. Always something going on even as today the small detail on the table of daffodils and Easter eggs. The owners Kisten and Julian have created a wonderful place. I wish I was a resident of Purleigh then we could visit more often. Best pub... More
