Great location and friendly welcome

The pub is located on a hilltop in the old village of Purleigh (not actually in Maldon) and there are distant views across the Blackwater estuary from the outside seating. It has a lovely old-fashioned feel and we had a warm welcome from the the staff behind the bar. Lunch was well cooked and... read more

We've been twice recently despite living nearby for 12 years - just wish we'd found it earlier. The food is fantastic - properly home cooked and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The waitress is brilliant and the landlady really welcoming. Go and try it - there are lots of other activities too in this little pub, organised... More

Fish night was excellent this week. The chef cooks fish very well and when given free rein he is at his best and most creative. The food would have gone down well in a top London restaurant without the price tag.

On Saturday night, we ate at the Purleigh Bell Inn. We had a really great meal, and the proprietors, Julian and Kirsten, were warm and welcoming. We had travelled a long distance to attend the Stow Maries fly-in and were thirsty and hungry. The menu was very tempting and offered a wide variety. The waitress was very cheery and friendly.... Eaten at the Bell before and was not too impressed, the food is pretty ok but the portions are small juxtaposed to the prices. What really gets me is how they can charge a wacking great £1.80 for a warm small soda and lime and equally warm beer, I just got a shrug from the waitress when the price was... More

Went for lunch with two friends and had a lovely lunch, some very interesting dishes of home cooked food. The waitress was happy and helpful. Will be going back soon.

If you have a meal in this pub be prepared to take a gamble. It has the "marmite factor" you will either love it or hate it. On the same day and at the same time we were in this pub with a group of friends and had thoroughly disappointing expirience. Yet upstairs were another group of our friends having... More

We went for lunch with our little dog. We were made to feel very welcome. There was a good choice of home made food. The food was freshly cooked and tasted delicious. Good choice of beers too. I can't wait to go again. No negatives.

Such a friendly old village pub offering excellent food from the live-in chef. Very popular so booking may be a good idea. On a fine day there are tables outside and the view is glorious. Food is first class and the staff helpful and accommodating .

Lovely Kirsten and the staff never let you down. The food is divine and the pub itself is the best you can wish for.
