The Purleigh Bell is set at the top of a hill, next to the Church, in a typical Essex village with charming country views. The atmosphere and ambience is that of a traditional, warm and friendly country pub just as it should be. The owners are a happy couple who make everyone welcome and serve well kept local beers at... The Purleigh Bell is a delight. If you consider the below your cup of tea, then do yourself a favour and book a meal. 1. Without fail, a warm greeting every single time you visit. 2. Cold beer, local ales and a varied wine list (the house red is very nice). 3. Tasty, varied and inventive menu that changes daily.... More

Had booked ( weeks before) for Saturday 12th December to take my aunt there for a special meal having been taken there before by my aunt and uncle and we enjoyed the evening then. We thought we would return and take my aunt when we visited from Leicester as my uncle had died last year. When we got there the... More

Lovely friendly efficient staff/owners very helpful and nothing is to much trouble. The food could be a lot better. Over cooked calfs liver and a poor dessert selection was disappointing however I will still go back again for a second try

I visited the Bell with some neighbours for a Christmas get-together, and cannot fault the evening. Excellent Christmas menu, good beers and wine, attentive service. A winning combination. Some of my neighbours hadn't visited the Bell before and they said they would definitely repeat the experience. Don't be swayed by the negative reviews here - this is one of the... More

I have visited twice in the last week with family and friends. The food and service was very good. For me the place was just too cold to fully enjoy a meal.On Sunday I sat near the door to the kitchen which was very busy. On my next visit ,having noticed on the way out that the main entrance area seemed... More

My wife phoned to book a week before we visited and requested a table near the fire which was agreed by the man on the phone. When we turned up, on time, the pub was empty, every table had a "reserved" tag on it, and the woman behind the bar seemed very put out that we wanted to actually sit... More

The Bell pub is set atop a hill in the small village of Purleigh, Essex affording an amazing view of the surrounding area. Although I live just a short distance away I have not often visited this pub for no particular reason, I must add. However looking for a change we called in for a pint early one Friday evening,... On a hill, not many of those in Essex, overlooking the Blackwater estuary in the distance and a great all round view from the village, the pub is found next to the Church and is an old world pub inside. It has a good range of beers, a meal specials board and even the bar menu is good. Food is... More

Enjoyed a lovely lunch here as a last minute decision local to where my Sister lives. Have been in the Bell before but a long, long time ago. Had a lovely warm welcome and were looked after from the moment we walked in to when we paid the bill and left. Their lunch time menu had so much to choose... More
