A real favourite - an authentic English pub.

We had a great family Sunday lunch. The atmosphere was great and the traditional roast lunch delicious. This was not our first visit and it won't be the last.

excellent food, very varied menu with some unusual dishes as well. Didn't have a booking but they "squeezed" us in. No fuss, no bother. Service was prompt but not hurried or rushed. Staff were very nice and friendly. We all had different meals and they were all delicious, can honestly say it was the best I've eaten in a pub.... More

Lovely traditional looking pub that sits on top of a hill in the village of Purleigh near Maldon. Had tried to book before but was always fully booked but we eventually went for lunch on a Sunday and im really glad i persevered as we both really liked this place...The atmosphere is great , lots of people chatting at the... Maybe our 5th or sixth visit in the last year or so which I suppose says something on it's own. We have a sort of circuit of Essex pubs we visit and finding this one at the recommendation of our daughter was a pleasant addition to the list. The food has always come from a nicely varied menu with the... More

So very welcoming, fantastic food, great selection of wines and ales, amazingly scrummy desserts all homemade. Always something going on even as today the small detail on the table of daffodils and Easter eggs. The owners Kisten and Julian have created a wonderful place. I wish I was a resident of Purleigh then we could visit more often. Best pub... More

I was very excited at the thought of a birthday lunch at the Bell as I'd heard, and read some excellent reviews. I can't fault the staff who were truly lovely. But overcooked food is not acceptable. I did mention it to the waitress who said she would let the kitchen know. No offer to replace with perfectly cooked food.... More

We stopped by chance last week and had a fantastic evening meal in front of a lovely open fire. We enjoyed it so much we returned a few days later to sample the menu further. So far we have had the fish and chips and soup of the day, and on the second visit it was Steak & Stilton Pie... More

The Purleigh Bell is set at the top of a hill, next to the Church, in a typical Essex village with charming country views. The atmosphere and ambience is that of a traditional, warm and friendly country pub just as it should be. The owners are a happy couple who make everyone welcome and serve well kept local beers at... The Purleigh Bell is a delight. If you consider the below your cup of tea, then do yourself a favour and book a meal. 1. Without fail, a warm greeting every single time you visit. 2. Cold beer, local ales and a varied wine list (the house red is very nice). 3. Tasty, varied and inventive menu that changes daily.... More

Had booked ( weeks before) for Saturday 12th December to take my aunt there for a special meal having been taken there before by my aunt and uncle and we enjoyed the evening then. We thought we would return and take my aunt when we visited from Leicester as my uncle had died last year. When we got there the... More
