Dining at La Palapa is modern cuisine in a modern restaurant on an old-style largely empty Mexican beach. We visited La Palapa as part of a bus tour from Merida that went to Celestun primarily to see the pink flamingos that populate the nearby swamps.... a sight not to be missed. Dining at La Palapa was casual and unhurried. Food... More

After visiting the flamingo reserve, we had less time than we would have liked if we wanted to drive back to Merida in daylight. Our waiter was very helpful and had our meal served with uncharacteristic Mexican speed. Our table was a few feet from a large arch through which a few yards behind were the beach and the sea.... For a seafood restaurant this is a great place when visiting Celestun. As always in Mexico the table is soon loaded with tortilla chips and dips, with drinks soon to follow. The prawns and fish are very fresh and the service fine. Dishes served with rice, vegetables, mashed potato, and sauces. The atmosphere under the large palapa is memorable, and... More

Sitting under a large palapa with a cool gulf breeze, dining on fish and shrimp and sipping on a cervesa...who could ask for a more leisure afternoon ? This is a tourist stop for the Flamingo Tour groups so it is geared for the "sand and surf" crowd. If you are looking for "fine dining" this aint it. However, the... More

La Palapa has one of the best locations in Celestun right on the beach. In the hot summertime it is most likely a very popular place to dine. It was our misfortune to be there for lunch on a cool and partly cloudy day. The building is a very huge "palapa" ( thatched roof open air building), with a charming... More

La Palapa is located right on the beach and is situated so that the shore breezes flow through the restaurant. Great views of the Gulf. Service is leisurely but who is in a rush? One of our party had grilled shrimp with garlic sauce which was excellent. We had fish filet grilled which was a little dry. Those who had... More

I ordered grilled shrimp and got a filet of shoe leather, frozen carrots and broccoli, a dollop of sticky white rice, and a dollop of mashed potato with a drizzle of gravy. I sent it back and asked for the shrimp, which came eventually and I wish it hadn't. A ring of microwaved shrimp with all the same disgusting sides.... More

Four of us had lunch here. Very nice open dining room right on the beach. Service was fine. Food was pretty good, if not great. The whole-fried fish was very good. Prices were a bit on the high side. Beer and wine available. I think I would want to check out some of the other restaurants in Celestun before coming... More

La Palapa is about what you expect from a restaurant on the beach. It focuses on seafood and atmosphere. I was part of a group visiting the nearby flamingo reserve, and our package included lunch at La Palapa. That lunch package was: tuna appetizer (not very good), garlic fish (tasty if you like garlic, as I do), and one juice.... More

Probably the best place to have octopus in the world due to the fishery and when in-season. Most tender, most delicious plate ever!
