A cosy place with a good view

We wanted to see Mt.Cook and the glaciers, but the weather was playing spoilsport. We went to Mt.Cook village anyway and sat at this restaurant and had coffee. It was raining heavily and the view was awesome. So we continued sitting there and ordered pizzas which were delicious.

Oh that's wonderful that you found our cosy spot in the storm! So glad you found us and that you enjoyed the coffee and pizza as well. The pizza base is sourdough, made by an artisan baker in Fairlie who has won many awards. Travel safe and thank you so much for your lovely review. More

We ate here this evening and found both the service and the food excellent. We both had the roast free range chicken which was very tasty and came with organic potatoes and vegetables (a welcome change from chips.) I was impressed that the plates were really hot...they seldom are in restaurants. Realising that there are few eating options in the... More

Thanks so very much for your great review. Yes, we like the food to be hot! Glad you do too! I will be sure to tell Ane that you enjoyed her service as well. (And the free range roast and organic veggies are one of our favourites as well!) Thanks for appreciating it. Travel safe. More

We've been to the place a few times - both during the summer and winter. Yes - cosy as a place and nice to have a cold beer by the warm fire in winter. But that's all that is great about the place. Food is OK - pub grub with some dishes being a bit better (sausage in sourdough bread)... More

A negative writeup is fair enough when it is honest. Yours isn't that accurate. We have light food yes, but we also have free range chicken roasts, no msg, grass-fed steak, fresh salads, sourdough artisan breads, organic meat in hamburgers, organic wine, organic potatoes, pumpkin and carrots to go with main roasts.Pizzas are with a sourdough base and most people... I had the salmon, rice and salad and it was really good. Partner and son had the sausages, they thought they would be like U.K sausages but nothing like them, very salty and more like a frankfurter so they were disappointed. Motive to this is don't expect it to be like the country you come from as you are in... More

Delighted to hear that you enjoyed your salmon and salad. The sausages are made locally, without chemicals or msg, so they probably do taste different from what your'e used to in the UK. More

Great to have an alternative to eating at The Hermitage when staying in Mount Cooke. Wonderful food and New Zealand wine along with a fabulous view - what could be better?

Great location and interesting write up in the menu describing the establishment and ethos of the restaurant. Unfortunately, the food and service didn't match the write up! After a long days walking I wanted something substantial and filling and so chose the 'pie of the day'. I expected a juicy homemade pie with some freshly cooked fries, but instead got... More

I agree that if you received a pie that was overcooked and chips undercooked that is not acceptable. However, I spoke to the waitress serving you and she assured me that nothing was mentioned about the chips or the pie (a gourmet pie from the artisan baker in Fairlie) when she asked how your meals were. She remembered you said... More

Beautiful cafe, and most impressive that they have organic food and beverages on the menu, however was quite disappointed when we asked if they could do an iced coffee on a hot summer day and the girl just said no, not really, seemed like she could not care less than that, then I asked if they have any ice cubes... So glad you enjoyed our cafe, except for not being able to get an iced coffee. It may seem odd, but we aren't set up at the moment for iced coffees and teas out the front; it is incredibly busy at this time of year and our staff are flat out trying to serve the 25 different coffees and teas... Our Rough Guide painted this venue in a terrific light so we decided that we would dine here before we had even arrived at Mount Cook. We has perhaps just got our hopes up about it being a really friendly and cosy mountain-hut type restaurant but both my partner and I were a little disappointed. The food is pretty expensive... We are DELIGHTED to hear that the food was good!! Brilliant! And the views!! So glad you loved those too! Unsure what your complaint is about the interior. It's an architecturally designed rustic mountain hut with historic photos of mountaineers, and genuine memorabilia adorning the walls. It is scrupulously clean. That is what it is. If you want white linen... More

We so enjoyed all our meals at the Old Mountaineers Café. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The food was locally sourced, plentiful and swiftly prepared. I also enjoyed the salmon bagel! My friend and I dined here for lunch being the only place in the village to eat. We weren't overly impressed with the service or the food. The lady at the counter seemed to be "learning" in which a "trainee" badge would have helped as I could see some other customers also getting frustrated with her. I had the gourmet... More

The pie was from the artisan bakery in Fairlie that has won many awards and it was very fresh as we receive daily deliveries. I'm glad the nachos were good. Yes, people do have to learn. Usually people aren't in such a rush in such a stunning environment and they have some understanding that with the only hope of us... More
