The ambience is great, the staff are really helpful. Some of the food was really good to excellent, and some of the food was average. over all we were happy overall. We ate there 2 nights in a row. Went back on second night because it was so good the first. We would recommend.

Nice restaurant with a side of history thrown in. We encountered a waiter who is first day at work here, so service is a bit slow. But no problem at all, as we have the entire afternoon free. The food is ok. We ordered the soup of the day, salmon salad and the meat pizza (turned up to be sausage... More

Good location if you get a window seat near the fire keeping extra toasty you can eat whilst viewing Mount Cook. Good atmosphere with rustic seating just like a mountain retreat. Enjoyed our sausage meal. Good coffee. Service was friendly it started good but faded.

View was magnificent. Food was average, sausages were tough and not very tasty. Had a lady waitress that was a snob and gave us attitude and ignored when we asked for help. Only giving the place 3 cos of the view and another waiter who seemed to go out of his way and made up for the shortcomings of his... More

We are very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the sausages. They are different as they are made up of more meat and no fillers and less bread, so if you're used to the cheaper fattier version of a sausage it may be a change. I checked with the staff and they remembered that you mentioned about the sausages,... More

We were looking for an alternative to the high priced meals at the big hotel in Mt Cook and our guide recommended the Old Mountaineer. My wife and I both had pizzas and were pleasantly surprised with the results. The restaurant has an inviting fireplace which is great for the many chilly days there. It was just a short walk... More

A great story of perseverance and winning against big business and bureaucracy, topped off with great views, good food and atmosphere. We visited two days ago for lunch, during what seemed to be a busy day. Our meals were solid, simple food - nachos, margarita pizza. It's worth reading the history of the cafe to gain an appreciation of the... More

We stopped at this restaurant on the 2nd Sep 2014 to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the scenery. We had just travelled from Lake Tekapo prior to going back to Oamaru to continue our trip around the island. Decided to stop in here for a bite and beverage, we had not read the reviews of this restaurant prior... More

Thanks for your lovely positive review. It was a delight to read and a very astute review.( The price for muffin, organic fair trade coffee and pot of tea with organic milk that you quoted is for two muffins.) I hope you had a lovely journey around the South Island. Travel safe. More
