A friendly family welcome is extended to all who visit The Highwayman, a grade II listed 17th century timber framed building that has been sympathetically extended. Located on the A140, just a few minutes outside Ipswich, Needham Market and Stowmarket in Suffolk, The Highwayman is easily accessible and an ideal meeting point for all occasions.David & Olga took over the running of The Highwayman restaurant in Ipswich in October 2004 and warmly welcome everyone to sample the honest homecooked food, a good selection and well kept real ales. The main restaurant and galleries provide a traditional and relaxing atmosphere in the which to dine amongst soft lighting that compliments the exposed oak frame of the building. Our food is all about the ingredients which, whenever possible, are locally sourced, seasonal and always freshly prepared. In particular a relaxing Sunday lunchtime at The Highwayman is sure to become a tradition. Tuck into roast rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

The Ladies Lunched

A group of six ladies chose to lunch here recently. The atmosphere was friendly though it was a bit disconcerting that there was only 1 fishcake available. However, it was obvious that the fishcake was home made and not bought in so obviously another batch were due to be made. Perhaps they should... read more

We were very impressed with the quality of the food and the attentiveness of the staff today. The festive menu that we chose was exemplary, with a wide choice of individual courses. The vegetables were cooked to just the right consistency and the turkey was delicious. All courses were served quickly, efficiently and the portions were ample. Despite the Highwayman... More

We came here last winter. When we arrived it was quite, but our table still wasn't ready. This wasn't a problem, however, as there is a lot of lovely places to sit with a drink. Once we were seated, service was quite slow. While we expected our food to take a while (as good food always should), we also had... More

The owner (/manager) of this place is one of those Basil Fawlty types that makes you wonder why he decided to go into hospitality. He insisted that we decide what we wanted to eat when we booked over the phone as there were 8 of us (not exactly a massive group), and then complained when we tried to pay by... More

The food was excellent We had the duck in plumb sauce that was really tasty, there was just enough vegetables all lovely. all meals arrived together and were hot. Children polished... More

Welcoming atmosphere and excellent service even though two of our party were very late. We were made welcome and not rushed at all. We were party of 9 and there were other large groups. All our meals were well cooked and very tasty. Range of dishes on menu to accommodate vegetarians and gluten free. Very pleasant surroundings (superb toilets!) We... More

This was our first visit, but it will not be our last. The bar and restaurant were behind the old coaching inn and modern yet in keeping with the surroundings. The owner was friendly but not pushy, we had plenty of time to check out the menus. We moved from the bar area to the restaurant after ordering. The food... More

Upon arrival the owner rushed us to order drinks and food. When the food arrived the beef was undercooked. After the meal, the owner made rude comments about the children that were with us. Overall an unpleasant experience.

From the moment we arrive we were rushed to order food and felt like we weren't welcome, then once we had finished our food we were told our 1 & 3 year old girls were being too noisy (just being children). Although the food was good we won't be returning. Definitely not a family friendly atmosphere.

Fantastic friendly service by all staff who dealt with us. Great food. Home made sticky toffee pudding to die for. Asked to take a seat in the bar area, ordered drinks and food. When food is ready you are asked to come to dining room where your table has been set and the fresh hot food is served immediately. A... More
