Fusion Indian

Booked the Malabar by phone when they were closed. Less than an hour later they returned my call to confirm the booking. Food was more fusion Indian which made a change. The Lamb shank dish looked sizeable but was mostly a pile of bones with little meat on. Despite that it was tasty and I did... read more

Pleasant environment and staff but the food was decidedly average. My chicken was very over cooked. The coating was spicy hot but lacking flavour and depth/ character. The dessert, creme brûlée, was pretty good but not anything special. Maybe we just made poor choices?

Had dinner here with my wife on 9th April. Shared starters of scallops with pork belly and soft shelled crab, followed by Asian greens and duck confit. Quality was outstanding, service attentive, and everything spotlessly clean. Highly recommended.

We were slightly surprised to find this place in Hanmer. It is one of the best new-style Indian influence restaurants we had visited in 3 continents. Very original use of traditional spicy ingredients, and so fresh! Very busy on a holiday weekend, but the service was impeccable, fast and personal. Can't recommend it highly enough. Suits couples and larger groups.... More

Wow this restaurant is amazing! I love Asian fusion and to be honest this is one of the best I have had. Don't waste your time ordering and filling yourself up on rice as there are so many beautiful dishes to experience and enjoy. We completely over-ate but thoroughly enjoyed every single mouthful. Compliments to the chef and service staff... More

My wife and I shared 3 of the starters with some extras (naan and rice) - the food was delicious and the setting lovely. Agree with all the positive reviews that led us here in the first place - its a great option for something a little different.

A surprising place to find high quality beautifully presented food at fair prices. And the restaurant itself is very zen. Classy but not self important. Go if you can!

Very frendly staff and management. We have enjoyed the small sharing plates as we like to test different types of dish. The cuisine is inspired of indian one but do not expect traditional indian food but a mix of the best of asian and kiwi food. Very good value for money. Otherwise I think they could do much better with... More

Malabar has a good reputation and we were not disappointed. The menu selection is not standard Indian fare but rather a range of international options with an Indian twist. Service is first class and the meals were superb. Thoroughly recommend.
