The former "Laurels" Restaurant re-opened its doors in May 2012, as "No.31 Restaurant & Bar", an A la Carte Restaurant specializing in modern European/New Zealand Cuisine. The restaurant is set in a quaint character cottage on the main street of Hanmer Springs. French doors open out to a lovely courtyard for alfresco dining and an outside bar leaner for pre-dinner drinks/cocktails in the warmer months. Inside the restaurant it is very homely, with an open fire, wooden floors and candle-lit tables. Award winning chef/owner, Michael van de Wiel ( previous chef/owner at "The Old Post Office Restaurant", Hanmer Springs, for 12 years). Fully Licensed and NOT BYO. Reservations Recommended.

Birthday dinner

My daughter surprised me for my birthday by making a reservation here, we were not disappointed. Lovely food, we sat outside under a sun umbrella, the staff were friendly and the food was delicious.

We went twice on consecutive nights although second night we only had mains. Food brilliant prepared and presented. One of best meals in a long time. Some brilliant tastes and flavours and everything done to perfection

No question if you want a great diner place. This is the one. Food is excellent and consistent, wine list is plentiful. Staff is amazing, patient, polite . Price wise it is the top of the range but value for money is too. I don't mind to pay for quality.

We had been advised to try this restaurant by friends so thought our 30th anniversary was a great opportunity. The setting is lovely and the food delicious. The waiter that served our table was fantastic, knowledgable with the wine list and very pleasant. The lady who greeted and seated us was slightly abrupt and not entirely welcoming.

We had a fantastic meal here. The steak and Venison were cooked to perfection and being a chef myself I am a lot more fussy than most, could not fault the food here in any way, shape or form. The staff were absolutely lovely and our meals came out in a timely manner we did not have to wait too... More

Last night had a superb meal, all for the food was consumed, nice service and a fair price. This was on par with some Michelin star restaurant food we have had.

I rate this place highly. I couldn't fault anything. The staff were friendly, professional and knowledgable. Our waiter had a great wine knowledge and made a perfect wine recommendation to accompany our menu choices. Our meals arrived in good time and were delicious. The Venison well cooked served on red cabbage and the duck well cooked and tasty. The desserts... More

I am highly indignant about the roudness that this place has to offer. I wanted to have a coup of coffee with my fiance at 5 afternoon and was advised by the waiter in a very condescending tone, that if I "just" want a coup of coffe, I need to sit outside or leave (the completely empty restaurant). If that... More
