Don't be put off from the road

Great food and atmosphere. Looks bland from the road but the orangery was lovely round the back. Waiter should have mentioned that you need to order veg separately! Would recommend.

This was the second year that we have been on holiday staying at the Akebar Caravan Park, and we used the Friars Head Restaurant and Pub every day. The pub is quite small but with loads of character dominated by a great fireplace. They sell all the usual drinks at quite reasonable prices. The pub leads out onto the beautiful... More

We have lived in the area for for over 20 years and have been in this bar/ restaurant only twice. When we were looking for somewhere for our wedding reception we struggled until my partner had an inspiration. Lets try The Friars Head at Akebar. We did, we tried a lunch , excellent and have been back many times since... More

Stopped off here for a quick drink after a visit to Leyburn for their 1940's weekend. It was only by chance we found it and wow, what a fantastic place to stop. The restaurant/pub is built on an old Friary (hence the name) and is full interesting nooks and crannies. The seating area, for large parties, wanting to dine, is... More

Have driven past so many times over the years and decided to stop with my mum (& dog) one weekday lunch time. The welcome was excellent as was the service throughout our entire two hour lunch. We both chose an open sandwich which came with gorgeous chips and a side salad and homemade coleslaw. We sat outside in the sun... More

So we came to The Friars Head after a day out with the intention of having a bite to eat and a few drinks in the sun, on arrival we were told that we couldn't eat outside - a little strange but we went a long with it anyway. The menu looked pretty good but there wasn't really anything there... More

We have eaten at the Friars Head many times, the restaurant is one of the most ambient that you could wish for. The menu has never been the most extensive but sufficient for all tastes and the food and service has always been exceptional. When we visited the Friars Head a couple of weeks ago, we felt that there was... More

We visited The Friars Head whilst staying with family and were pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. We all had the Early Bird evening special and the food and the prices were excellent. We all had the steak and ale pie with chips and it was absolutely delicious - with generous portions. The staff were attentive but not obtrusive. We... More

We went to the Friars Head for lunch and were delighted by the whole experience. The orangery where we sat to eat our lunch was so calming and relaxing. We were surrounded by lush green plants and fantastic overhead vines. The sound of gently running water was provided by a partly hidden tiny indoor fish pond...lovely views from the arched... More

Came here as another choice opens only in the evenings. Whilst let down elsewhere I knew this place would be welcoming & worthwhile: it was. My friend and I arrived a tad after 1pm and enjoyed both a homemade burger and beef sandwiches (with coleslaw + salad) washed down with good beer. The barman and waiter were pleasant and helpful....
