Lunch was part of a package. I chose Fish and Chips. This was served modern posh style, rather than in the northern manner, with the chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce all in their individual pots. The good chips were solid and so retained their heat in the cold pot. The meager quantity of mushy peas could not do so in a... More

Sad that they have stripped out anything with character from the restaurant, including lovely old panelling, to create a dining room/cum art gallery that feels like it could be anywhere ...with MDF panelling replacing the character...and paintings priced up for sale. Nothing of any character has been left in what is a wonderful old building. That said the food is... More

I felt rather like an Agatha Christie character sitting in the tea room at the Black Swan but it was fantastic. We had an excellent lunch, Gluten Free sandwiches to die for, pleasant service and friendly staff. Rather on the expensive side for lunch but worth every penny.

I remember coming up to York in the 60s and have fond memories of high tea at The Black Swan in Helmsley and thought it a lovely surprise to take my wife while up in York. This little market town is so picturesque, everyone going about their business, its like living in 'All Creatures Great and Small' country. The service... More

Had a lovely 3 course meal at this Hotel, the meat was melt in the mouth and the chocolate tart pudding was amazing so good. Would eat here again but its quite on the pricey side.

I and my wife made an unplanned visit to this place last year for afternoon tea. This is probably the costliest tea room in this place, so we wanted to try the oomph factor associated with this posh tea room. We were not disappointed as we were treated to some delicious freshly baked cakes and fruit scones with strawberry jam... More

We travelled with our puppy and chose the Black Swan. because it was dog friendly. Our stay was excellent from start to finish. Superb customer service, fabulous ambiance, outstanding food and situated in a picture perfect Yorkshire market town . Highly recommend a stay here with or without a dog.
