We stayed in a villa in Casole d'Elsa for a week and came here 3 times - all were good both in terms of the value a food quality. The staff are also great and they speak good English. The wild boar pappardelle is the best pasta in my mind and they make great pizza. A nice touch is that... More

From our villa near Volterra we stumbled across this very well attended local & traditional looking Italian restaurant which to our pleasing turned out to be quite superb! Greeted upon our entrance by Vincenzo we found him to be very welcoming & throughout the whole experience nothing was too much trouble. It was quite apparent that many of the local... More

Vincenzo has to be the most enthusiastic restauranteur in the area. His food is fresh, well cooked and presented and service is always with a smile. Every time we visit (twice this holiday) there is a high proportion of locals eating there and it is particularly welcoming for children. You wouldn't pick Il Merlo on its external appearance, but don't... More

Just reading a previous review by someone who said it was the worst restaurant experience ever - find it had to believe but they must have been really unlucky. We found Il Merlo quite by accident while staying at the Aquaviva Hotel. We went because it was a 15 min walk from our hotel so my husband didn't have to... More

We visited twice during our holiday and both times were treated with outstanding service, very family friendly and welcoming, by our second visit we were made to feel like one of the family. The view from our table was breathtaking. Our party of 12 were all very happy with our meal. A lot of local eating here as well as a... More

We arrived about 20:20, two couples. The restaurant was about 1/3 full. We waited about 10 minutes when someone of the staff came to our table with the menu cards. We had to wait long again when we managed to catch Vincenzo (the owner). Before this Vincenzo took the orders from the neighbouring table who arrived later then us! We... More

Il Merlo looks outdated from the outside, has a very simple decor inside but the food is really good. We visited this place twice and were not disappointed. On both occasions there were several locals. There is good choice of starters, pasta, main dishes and desserts and the portions and quality were really nice. The wine was very good too.... More

We eat here whenever we are in the area and we've never been disappointed. Vincenzo, the owner is charming and the food is excellent both in terms of quality and value for money. Thoroughly recommended.

Every dish we ordered was just great. Also very good value for money and clearly also used a lot by locals. The decoration and interior is not beautiful, but go there for the food!

This is a real find. Vincenzo is so welcoming and enthusiastic about his food, and with good reason. We ate here 4 times during our holiday (once at lunchtime). The sea bass was outstanding and all we had tasted exceptional. We experienced the same as another reviewer - we hit one night where there was a party and the bill... More
