Fabulous creative dishes, the ingredients cooked to the point with perfection combined with outstanding service. This place serves a fantastic combination of local food spiced up with international influences, mastered with a French cooking style. By far - really far - the best place in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. Read more for details... My wife and I went to... more

These are people who care about food, who love food. I stumbled upon Azucar by happy accident when I stayed at Franks Place for a recent surf trip. Wow! I have eaten less well for many times more in Boston and Paris. Expect the freshest food, prepared creatively, but without novelty for novelty's sake. As a red wine drinker, I... more

I spent about seven weeks in costa rica this year and wasnt to impressed with the food, until i visited Azucar, that is. Being a vegetarian can be a bit complicated in CR, but not in this restaurant. with help from the friendly staff I always got something new and fresh. In fact, I ate so much there that after... more

We brought the list of restaurants that were recommended on Trip Advisor, and could not believe that this was #2! As a matter of fact, we were frightened to eat at #3 after this meal. The service was slow, slow, slow, even for Costa Rica!!! And the food was absolutely terrible--I didn't even eat my meal (and by the time... more

We are very sorry to read that you were disappointed by the food and service at our restaurant. We have been in business over 3.5 years now and take good pride to deliver a good dining experience to all our customers. As a matter of fact most of our clients are repeat customers an locals as were the people from...

We ate at Azucar twice for lunch during our trip. Both times the food was great and the service was prompt. They were one of the only restaurants we found in the area that served plantains with their casada (typical rice/bean/meat dish), which was a definite plus. The fish on our second trip was a bit dry and overcooked, but... more

My husband and I stumbled on Azucar (a hidden jewel) when we decided to stay at Frank's Place, an inexpensive, clean, hotel at the tip of Malpais a cool surfer beach town. Upon check in, Morgane, the hostess (and co-owner) made us feel welcome and impressed us with her ability to speak several languages. She joyfully discussed the specials of... more

I had very high hopes for this restaurant. In fact, we tried to eat there on a night they were closed and decided that we had to eat there before leaving Mal Pais, so we did. We noticed that locals (Americans living in Mal Pais) were eating there which seemed to bode well for the meal. In fact, the meal... more

I have spent many mornings and evenings in the restaurant Azucar at Franks Place and it was always superb. Especially the evening menus with its fantastic food - always fresh and always creative - is what I can highly recommend! I had by far the best fish in the Restaurant Azucar!!! But not only the food, also the french owner... more

I have traveled and lived in many different part of the world - Middle East, Far East, Australia, North Africa, North America and Costa Rica, and eaten many types of food in many different places. Nolvis and Morganne provide some of the best food and service I have ever experienced in Azucar. I was really sad when they left Cobano... more

I've been to many restaurants in some of the nicest resorts in Costa Rica and most of them have been good. Azucar, however, cannot be compared to any of them. This place has a REAL chef, providing 5 star New York/Palm Beach quality food. I had two dinners and both came with fantastic sauces different from anything I've ever had.... more
