Husband and I had a trip up the mountain and he recommended this cafe. Greeted by a lovely friendly and very attentive lady. I agree the decor is not up to much but the food made up for it. My only comment is we only got our drinks after we had received our meal but then the meals came out... More

We.were looking forward to a lunch at the Chateau, on arrival we were told we could get a meal at the cafe around the corner, which is attached to the Chateau. First impression the decor was dated, we were greeted by a friendly waitress and could sit where we wished, unfortunately because of the window height you cannot take advantage... More

I have to admit the rather unimpressive look of the cafe might have had us going elsewhere, if there had been anywhere else to go. The cafe is located in a rather old and uninviting room of plain tables that rather lacks atmosphere. But the menu suggests hidden depths of creativity that were borne out when our food arrived. We... More

I just popped into Pihanga for a coffee after finding that the other cafe in the Village had closed early (again) was was tempted into lunch after a quick glance at the menu. Everything about this place was slick and professional. I was seated immediately and reseated when I asked for a seat further from the door due to the... More

After a long wait we received an undercooked lamb shank and a disastrous venison sausage which had more in common with a frankfurter made of gristle than a decent meal. If it had been incredibly cheap we could have understood the quality, but it was not that cheap by NZ standards. The staff seemed massively overworked and we also had... More

We went here for dinner. The food here was excellent. It was beautifully presented, very tasty and plenty of it. I ordered the pasta and it was very fresh with lovely little cherry tomatoes scattered throughout it, the sauce was light and complimented the pasta well. Our waitress was very friendly and the service was excellent. This meal was extremely... More

This is not somewhere I'd choose to come for an evening meal but due to the Chateau main restaurant being fully booked, I ended up eating here recently. It really is set up more like a lunch bar so totally lacks any ambiance. The food took so long to arrive that we had to ask how much longer it would... More

We understood from the locals that there wasn't much choice of food in Tongariro due to the road closure. We stayed in Bayview Chateau for the night. Thus, we ended up in Pihanga for both dinner and breakfast. The dinner was unexpectedly good and the food was delectable. The service was good. We had a memorable evening in Pihanga. Agreed... More

This Cafe is adjacent to/under the hotel and while the hotel has great views the cafe didn't have any views that I can recall. The food was good, price reasonable and service was with a smile. Worth a look if you are in the area and want a reasonable meal. If this venue doesnt suit try the pub across the... More
