Not a huge choice on the menu but the food when it came was very good and there was plenty of it. service wasn't great, certainly not to the standard we have become used to in New Zealand

Food here is prepared in the same kitchen as the (far swankier) Chateau restaurants, and it shows. Whilst the selection isn't as wide you'll get a good sized serving of tasty food at a much better price, and the relaxed cafe atmosphere means you can feel right at home clonking round in your boots and jacket. Service is unfailingly friendly,... More

I am not sure what the hamburger is made out of, but it certainly was nothing like ground sirloin. It is frustrating when you ask if a burger is homemade, the waiter replies 'yes, and you still end up with a mystery meat burger. And you pay $19 for it. My husband and I had burgers, and our friends had... More

We had been looking forward to fish and chips for dinner after doing one of the walks in the National Park. Our waiting staff were ok, friendly enough and brought us lots of free cold water. We both ordered the Fishermans Basket, which was average. The batter was chewy and the oysters were only just ok. It was also far... More

I go often to restaurants, all over the globe but I have never seen such a rude person, thanks Lord, it was only one. I have literally been shouted at. Well, I am not going elaborate on that anymore. Regarding food, the starters were pretty good, burger was medium and finally lamb was very tasty. But I would not go... More

The skinny: Parking- free paved lot across from visitor center Decor- bland Service- friendly and sweaty Coke Factor- in the can Food- pretty good When we walked into the Pihanga cafe to get out of the rain we saw the dismal ambiance and instantly deflated. We were cold, tired and hungry and it didn't look like this place could give... More

Went there with my brother and my teenage son. Good selection on menu at reasonable prices. We had a good range, from curry to steak to lamb shank. Cooked beautifully definitely recommend to all others. Lovely coffee to finish off the great meal

We were staying at the chateau - and there is not much choice of places to eat, but we were happy to eat here all 3 evenings. The first night we did not have a reservation but they had a table. On the other 2 nights we called in as we arrived back at the hotel and booked for later.... More

Since we visited Tongariro National Park during the shoulder season, there were not many choices of restaurants open, but we didn't regret going to Pihanga. Our servers were very friendly and prompt, and my salmon was very well prepared. I'd definitely come back here!
