As long as you go expecting to have a bit of a wait, this is a good choice. All the usual dishes, local produce and Real Ale. The food is home cooked and delicious: try Belly Pork or Lamb Shank especially. Staff are friendly and helpful, there's a good mix of locals and visitors so a welcoming atmosphere.

We did finally get food but got quite a bit older in the waiting. We went in with a group of seven and they seated us in the "restaurant" and told us to order off the menu for large groups. Some of our group didn't like any of the options from this restricted menu so we asked if we couldn't... More

It's a small pub so there isn't a lot of space to fit people in. The menu is more varied and interesting than many others in the area, but the meal I got wasn't actually all that great so I'd rather stick to the very-well cooked options elsewhere. I was also disappointed in the types of beer on tap -... More

Good food, friendly, informal, [pub] atmosphere. Kevin, the landlord, [connoisseur of single malt whiskeys] is an interesting character and takes a keen interest in his clientele.

Lovely welcoming pub with excellent food. Went back we enjoyed it so much. Don't confuse with the very disappointing Black Bull in Cawbridge

This is the best hostelry in Haltwhistle. We visited this during a Hadrians cycle ride and visited in the afternoon while still hot & sweaty after the ride and sampled a very good pale ale. We then returned in the evening and had spicy meatballs and veggie burger, both were excellent. The landlord and staff were top dollar and will... More

We ate here the 2 nights we were in Haltwhistle. The food was great and there was a good selection of local beers. The staff was very helpful and service was quick and friendly. The local clientele were also very friendly. The owner, Kevin, sat down at our table and we had a great hour or so of laughs and... More

Went to the Black Bull while staying at a local B&B and visiting Hadrians Wall. Old fashioned pub with great atmosphere, friendly staff, good beer and great pub food. One of the better pubs we visited while in the UK for a month. If you like pubs you will not be disappointed!!

Loved the food here. We stayed locally and ate here every night we were there. The choice was great, the food was freshly cooked and tasted fantastic.

First, the food is so good! Everything prepared is so fresh and delicious! Drinks are great, the staff is friendly and fun. Kevin, the owner is really what gives the place its character. Because he is a remarkable, lovable character! We made new friends, and were treated to the "real thing". Good food, good company, good drinks, laughter and fun!... More
