The pub itself is small and dining is at small tables around the one bar. But the staff were welcoming, there is a good selection of real ales and the beef and ale pie is probably the best I have ever tasted.

We had our evening meal in "The Black Bull" most nights during our 7 night stay in Haltwhistle. The only night we tried another Pub we wished we were at "The Black Bull". The landlord was a "character" and his staff were lovely. The menu was varied and the food well cooked and the portions very generous.

We booked at a distance as part of a planned trip to walk Hadrian's Wall. The dinner was very tasty and the service was good. Recommended.

Went to several pubs for dinner on our holiday and dinner served here was the best pub meal. Very friendly staff. Beer great.

As long as you go expecting to have a bit of a wait, this is a good choice. All the usual dishes, local produce and Real Ale. The food is home cooked and delicious: try Belly Pork or Lamb Shank especially. Staff are friendly and helpful, there's a good mix of locals and visitors so a welcoming atmosphere.

We did finally get food but got quite a bit older in the waiting. We went in with a group of seven and they seated us in the "restaurant" and told us to order off the menu for large groups. Some of our group didn't like any of the options from this restricted menu so we asked if we couldn't... More

It's a small pub so there isn't a lot of space to fit people in. The menu is more varied and interesting than many others in the area, but the meal I got wasn't actually all that great so I'd rather stick to the very-well cooked options elsewhere. I was also disappointed in the types of beer on tap -... More

Good food, friendly, informal, [pub] atmosphere. Kevin, the landlord, [connoisseur of single malt whiskeys] is an interesting character and takes a keen interest in his clientele.

Lovely welcoming pub with excellent food. Went back we enjoyed it so much. Don't confuse with the very disappointing Black Bull in Cawbridge

This is the best hostelry in Haltwhistle. We visited this during a Hadrians cycle ride and visited in the afternoon while still hot & sweaty after the ride and sampled a very good pale ale. We then returned in the evening and had spicy meatballs and veggie burger, both were excellent. The landlord and staff were top dollar and will... More
