We came two nights in a row (a tough feat because of the limited reservations) but no other sushi compares. Even after eating at Nobu, whose reputation is high, this blew them out of the water. The chefs were very nice and were able to recommend their most fresh nigiri for us. Everything we had was spectacular. In nigiri, we... More

Food was pretty much everything fresh and tasty. If you experienced real Izakaya food and fresh sushi in Japan, it is hard to say this place is the best. But all chefs are Japanese who originally from Japan. They are so friendly and very professional. Price are little high, but you are in Honolulu, so that is understandable. I and my husband... More

Perhaps my expectations were too high after reading so many rave reviews both here and on Yelp. However, I found everything was too salty. In general food in Hawaii was too salty, so perhaps it was adapting to local tastes? The sashimi was good, but I've had better in my hometown of Toronto. It was an expensive disappointment for us.

I have written this review earlier but I guess you did not receive it. My wife and I have been going to Gaku Izakaya for sushi once a week for the past 4 years and we are now practically part of their family. We have been to many sushi restaurants in Hawaii and Japan and consider Gaku as one of... More

I can say this place rates top 3 on my list. We ate at 4 sushi places and this place killed the rest! Top TOP quality sushi! Sushi chefs are really entertaining and not drones. Get the moi and tuna as well as seabass, best choice by far! Even the toro was really great! Spent about 100 bucks but it... More

After all these years, this restaurant continues to be one of the best and amongst our favorites when visiting the island. All the sushi has been consistently excellent throughout the years and again on this visit. If you never have been here, this is the one sushi restaurant we highly recommend if you must try one during your visit. Advance... More

Absolutely delightful. We did not have recommendations so we waited an hour. Well worth the wait. The service is impeccable, sweet, and respectful. I came here on my birthday and was treated with such care. We sat at the bar and had omakase. A wonderful meal that allows the chef to bring our various dishes of his choosing. However, we... More

Wow! Best sushi experience. Do make sure you call ahead and make a reservation. Otherwise be prepared to wait an hour or so. The sashimi is fresh, providing a very simple yet refreshing flavor.

I have tried Nobu, the Iron chef restaurant and Gaku is so much better than these two with better value in price. I have been to Japan many times and this restaurant is what you will find in Tokyo. Many Japanese restaurants in the U.S., americanize the menu and the food, not Gaku. You must try the $48 omakase sushi... More

One of my must do in Oahu is to have my sushi fix here, if you are a California roll kind of person this place is not for you. Gaku is authentic Japanese food, they serve the most freshest local fish around and the quality and the presentation is amazing. They are always packed, so reservation is a must. If... More
