Normally I do not order sushi from izakayas because typically most izakayas specialize in anything but sushi and it's usually the non-Asians that order sushi. But Sushi Izakaya Gaku is different because true to their name where "sushi" comes before "izakaya", Sushi Izakaya Gaku definitely does sushi right. Oh and they do great izakaya dishes as well. My wife, who is Japanese, and I came here for dinner. Everything we ate was delicious and beautifully prepared..from Wagyu beef to fresh King crab to soba and other dishes. She enjoyed it very much, as did I. Very authentic. An excellent meal and experience. Reservation a must.

Extremely popular, and always full (with lots of Japanese customers) for valid reasons: The food is good, and service is very friendly and attentive. In my opinion, the cooked dishes tend to be better, and quite reasonably priced. They also have some innovative sushi dishes. But I would avoid sashimi, which is not very high quality and way overpriced.

Excellent Japanese pub food which are small plates to share. Have to be adventurous to try new combinations of dishes. Their oyster shooters are to die for. Haven't had a dish we did not enjoy! Do need reservations unless you go at 5:00pm when they open.

This is the real deal. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent ambience. Note: You need to make reservations several weeks in advance.

Just. Go. It's Japanese bar fare- sort of like tapas style. It's just. Awesome. Overall it's a low-key small space, fills fast- great to sit at the bar, where u can watch them prep the food and be all, "what's that? Gimme." Monkfish was something else. Caviat- you have to be adventurous with food. Do yourself a favor and go... More

You know...the first visit here I was extremely excited for but the service was so atrocious that I really have no idea what the food tasted like....I won't describe the waitperson only I'll say that the person is still there and you'll know when you see... As a small sample of what we went through that night, green tea ice... More

Top rate experience both on the sushi side and the Izakaya side. Everything from the greeting upon entering to the atmosphere to the service and of course to the food. We went with four people and ordered no holds barred, so we got to try several apps, a ton of sushi and a couple of the hot dishes. I'd put... More

This small sushi place in an unassuming neighborhood of Honolulu has garnered much encomium from reviewers on this site. I have been to Honolulu dozens of times in the last 25 years and know the city well. I have my favorite sushi joints but on this last trip, decided to try something new. So we duly made our before 7-PM... More

You need a reservation before 7 pm. If you want to attend before 7 pm, that will be very hard to do last minute because they are often booked. After 7 pm, it is walk-ins. We showed up at 9 pm and did not wait. The sushi is excellent. Well worth it if you like sushi culinary experiences on vacation.
