7/30/2015 Actually, this a 4 1/2 star review. I know that people have criticized this place, but we always have a good meal here. This time was no different. Walked in without booking on a busy night and were seated fairly quickly. We started with some oysters - really good oysters. I had the crispy yellowtail flounder which was not battered and served whole, it was delicious. My parents had the bluefish and the swordfish strips, both were really good. The linguine that it came with was good, needed... More

Upon our arrival at our bed and breakfast we asked for a casual seafood restaurant to enjoy our first night in Newport. Scales fit the bill. The menu is on blackboards, the wine list, while small, has great wines and priced well, and the food was great. The service was perfect. My wife and kids loved it.

This was my second visit and still nothing worth raving about. Had the mussels marinara. While there were plenty of mussels their size let a lot to be desired. They were so tiny they should have been illegal. The sauce was bland. My husband had the monk fish. It was just ok. Being able to see your food being prepared... More

I can never go to Newport without eating at Scales and Shells! The seafood is so fresh, I wonder if they go out and pull the fish from the ocean! It is amazingly delicious! Their cherrystone appetizer is to die for! I could have eaten a bushel! I loved the shrimp scampi, and my daughter had the scallops and said... More

While we are in Newport we always have to go to Scales & Shells. The seafood is outstanding & I love the Clams linguini! It's delicious! It's fun to watch the chefs preparing the dinners. I only wish they took reservations. We just go a little early to have a drink at the bar while we wait for our table.... More

We had the Lobster Fra Diavlo for two, The sauce was well seasoned and complemented the shellfish and pasta which was properly cooked al dente.. The calamari and little necks were fresh and tasty. 30% of the mussels were served unopened (dead before cooking and should have been discarded). The lobster was cooked in water that was way to salty... More

Not as good as I remembered.. I've been here twice before but it was a few years ago and my experiences were wonderful. This time, I thought that the prices were too high for the food that we received and I thought that the service could use some improvement. Our server was ok, but the people clearing tables were trying... More

down the street from most of the main restaurants this was a great place for seafood. However the seafood has not been anywhere as good as it once was. Meal was just ok anything you did get with past was a huge amount of pasta and lobster was tough as it was cooked a bit longer than it should have.... More

This is about our 6th time to the restaurant. As I was walking in my wife and I were joking about the last time we were there. There was a table with about 6 people and there was one person at the table who was so obviously loud, like he was THAT important that everyone must listen to what he... More
