German specialties here

Sauerbraten and schnitzel were good, although not outstanding. Decor was charming and original. Complimentary valet parking was a plus.

In town for a family gathering. We decided that we would all meet at The Student Prince for Lunch afterwards. Although I am an out-of-towner, I have ties to Springfield and I've always known that this place has been a Springfield landmark. We were fortunate to have Gary Fialky and his wife Elaine in our party so I had to... More

The last two visits to the recently re-opened Fort were truly a disappointment. The first visit was to entertain out of town friends and catch up on old times. While the food was good the waiter was overbearing and hovered during the entire meal. During our conversations he tended to interrupt even after we had asked for time to look... More

We are very sorry that you did not enjoy the restaurant. Right now we are going over the menu and since several people have mentioned that they would like the scallops with a different preparation, we will be doing that. We will do some work with our servers and try to give them some guidance about not rushing tables. I... More

Can't say enough about this restaurant. We were with two other couples and we all enjoyed our meals. I had the lamb shanks... the meat just fell off the bones. Also enjoyed our mixed green salad... the dressing was exceptional. Would go again if I were ever to be back in Springfield.

A dozen+ of us had dinner at the Fort. They’ve recently re-opened and the place looked great with the same charming atmosphere (just with some improvements). The menu has been changed a bit, but our favorites were still there. We tried a variety of German dishes, beer, desserts, and of course we had chauvinettes. Service was great, even with our... More

Thanks for sharing your nice thoughts. We are proud of our German dishes and try to keep them authentic. The place looks a bit different, but a bit of a spruce up was needed. More

I went back to the Student Prince for the first time since the change of ownership and refurbishment last weekend. To be frank, I was afraid that it wouldn't have the character that it previously displayed. I was pleasantly surprised. Although they did a major sprucing up, it's still the Student Prince and Fort; the kind of place that becomes... More

I went during their Wild Game festival, and had a rabbit with orecchiette dish. Superb! The place is FILLED with history and memorabilia, and is so German it converts a little bit of everyone that enters. Great food and wonderful atmosphere earn this place five out of five!

Kind of hard to find if you are not from Springfield, but well worth it when you do. I had a Tank No. 7 IPA and my wife had a glass of Riesling. We had the fried Brie appetizer which was good. I had the German Sampler which I highly recommend. It includes Goulash, bratwurst, pork chop and German potatoes.... More

This was our first time back since it reopened under new management and the changes are subtle. They have added booths, but the stein collection is still prominent and much of the menu remains the same. Our visit tonight was to enjoy the seasonal and regional delicacy shad and roe, available only this time of year and for only a... More

Just enjoyed a celebratory lunch at the Student Prince! The food and staff were fabulous. . .try the chauvinette for dessert. . a delicious concoction of spirits and ice cream. The fried cheese and butterflied shrimp are amazing! The atmosphere is inviting and fun.

I am glad that you liked the establishment. Fried cheese and a chauvenette are long standing favorites. i remember when I was in high school having a sip of the chauvenette when my Dad was trying to perfect the recipe. As I recall he tried many different versions. See you on Fort Street, Rudi More
