Hard to find, but worth the search. Great outdoor courtyard. Interesting and creative menu. Asian influences.
Fresh food, creative menu, friendly staff. Nice ambiance, especially when the weather is good and you can eat at an outside table. But no need to wait for Spring/Summer; well worth the expense any time of year. One of two truly excellent restaurants on the island.
Ask someone, call them for detailed instructions, whatever--just get there. Really good food and lovely staff--everything you want. I was there in super-low season and internet and phone service down on the island. They were as gracious as could be and my meals were terrific. Dining on the whole island is rather expensive but at Backdoor the value was honest.... More
We spent some time on San Juan Island recently, and Backdoor was recommended to us by some other people we met. It's in town, albeit in a rather odd location, but once we found it we were happy. Food and service were wonderful, ambiance was quite nice. If I had to choose one restaurant on the island to recommend, it... More
Wonderful food. Hubby said best lamb chops he's ever had. And he's had a lot! Service was great atmosphere eclectic. The only negative was our table was in the bar with either an ice machine or refrigerator running in the background so Rey hard to hear the music and since it was our anniversary and had made reservations was a... Hidden in a corner of Friday harbor is this gem. We started with margaritas which were fresh and not too sweet. The corn nada cake and stuffed feta appetizers were amazing. I loved every bite of the vegetarian Indian entree and my husband loved the pork chop with yams and poblano chilies. A must eat place on San Juan.
My mum and I went here for dinner on our weekend trip to San Juan Island. It's in a funny little hidden place; around the backdoor! The food was delicious, our sever was friendly, the atmosphere was relaxing, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner night out. I highly recommend having a meal at Backdoor whether its casual or a date-good memories... More
Were it not for the fact my meal was only as wonderful as numerous great thalis I've had in vegetarian Indian restaurants in the Middle East, East Africa, and India, I would have checked yes in the "this is one of the best meals I've ever had in a restaurant" box. It wasn't the standard thali where you get a... More
We come here every year and eat out often. This year the winner was clearly "the Backdoor". Great food. Our only complaint was the manager/owner. When we arrived he pointed to a table in the bar. I asked if we could be seated at a table in the main dining room. There were 2 empty. He said they were for... More
This restaurant is a little hard to find but totally worth it. The garden setting is lovely with various intimate almost private places to sit and dine. The dining room was also small and intimate and opened out onto the garden area. Food was interesting and fresh with a decent wine list. Loved it.
