Our son told us that this was a great place to eat and that it had been on Food Network. We had the onion rings as an appetizer and chicken fried steak. The portions are huge and everything delicious. The service was also excellent.

It used to be a great place to eat, last couple of times I've gone; they have changed there chicken fried steak recipe or something. It was more bland and the service has always been mediocre at best. But again, the last couple of times; they are at a new low. I've been eating there for 20 years and the... More

We had seen this on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and thought it looked good. It was even better in person than on TV. All food is prepared fresh and hot. We will definitely eat here again.

I have to start by telling you I first went to Tip Top Cafe in 1980 on a visit to San Antonio. I lived in San Antonio twice (last time 1988) and any trip back has to include a visit to Tip Top Cafe. This is definitely not fancy but it has been around since 1938 and they know a... More

We have eaten at the Tip Top a few times before it was renovated but won't be going back. I had the chicken fried steak sandwich and the wife got the fried chicken. It took almost a half hour for the food and the chicken was over cooked (very tough and over crisp). I asked for more mayo and the... More

My 2 business colleagues and I went to the Tip Top today at lunchtime. One had the chicken fried steak- this is their signature dish. Another colleague ordered the cheeseburger while I had the club sandwich. Even as we sat down we were asked for our drink order - these was maintained full throughout our time there. We enjoyed the... More

It's been 40 years since last there and it's as good now as it was then....... You have to order the Onion Rings if nothing else. The Chicken Fried Steaks were almost falling off the plate (you better be hungry), the Fried Oysters were great, none of those dime size here. The deserts were great. You have to go there... More

On a recent trip to San Antonio I had the pleasure of dining at one of the cities restaurant landmarks. Tip Top Cafe which has been in business since 1940. The exterior is styled in art decco and has retained is exterior all these years. This is were the locals go to have old fashion home cooking. The prices are... More

We stopped by for lunch and the catfish was on special so I ordered the catfish and my husband had the Chicken Fried Steak which was outstanding. The minute we sat down we were asked for our drink order and served our silverware and napkin. The young man kept our tea glass full and it was not long before our... More

Good comfort food in San Antonio. I had the cheeseburger, which was juicy and delicious and their famous onion rings. My wife had the pork cops and fries. Fantastic lemon cheese pie. Very good service from Anita. Bring cash for your meal. Very old neighborhood cafe.
