My 2 business colleagues and I went to the Tip Top today at lunchtime. One had the chicken fried steak- this is their signature dish. Another colleague ordered the cheeseburger while I had the club sandwich. Even as we sat down we were asked for our drink order - these was maintained full throughout our time there. We enjoyed the... More

It's been 40 years since last there and it's as good now as it was then....... You have to order the Onion Rings if nothing else. The Chicken Fried Steaks were almost falling off the plate (you better be hungry), the Fried Oysters were great, none of those dime size here. The deserts were great. You have to go there... More

On a recent trip to San Antonio I had the pleasure of dining at one of the cities restaurant landmarks. Tip Top Cafe which has been in business since 1940. The exterior is styled in art decco and has retained is exterior all these years. This is were the locals go to have old fashion home cooking. The prices are... More

We stopped by for lunch and the catfish was on special so I ordered the catfish and my husband had the Chicken Fried Steak which was outstanding. The minute we sat down we were asked for our drink order and served our silverware and napkin. The young man kept our tea glass full and it was not long before our... More

Good comfort food in San Antonio. I had the cheeseburger, which was juicy and delicious and their famous onion rings. My wife had the pork cops and fries. Fantastic lemon cheese pie. Very good service from Anita. Bring cash for your meal. Very old neighborhood cafe.

Last night was my first and last visit to this restaurant. My Mother, Aunt and myself decided to try it based on Guy's reviews on his show "Diners,Drive ins and Dives". We were so disappointed. First we started out with our drinks which were filled maybe twice. Our waitress was very slow to visit our table. I ordered the fried... More

Very good chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy; Good, fresh garden salad with large variety of house-made, old school salad dressings; Huge portions on the steak and potato (good value); Quick service and a very polite, efficient wait staff; beware... From 11am to 1pm, the line sometimes runs way out the door; however, they do move people through pretty... More

Guy Fieri over sold this one on triple D! We tried the country fried steak and the pork roast, eh? My son had the enchiladas and they looked like they were made with canned hormel chili.

We visited SA this week 6/3/14 as part of a "BBQ" tour. We capped-off our SA tour with a trip to Tip Top. We hadn't been back to the Tip Top in 30 years. The chicken-fried steak was wonderful as always, cooked to perfection...needed more gravy, but good. The crowning glory was the buttermilk pie. OMG. Yes, you must have!... More

I visit San Antonio friends often and we generally have lunch at the Tip Top at least once during my stay. I have a great liking for good southern fried chicken. My last two visits I have had their fried chicken; both times it was over cooked. Just not good! Another visit I had their chicken friend steak and it... More
