Schilo's - Two thumbs up

What a great place to stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Our party of four mixed breakfast/lunch. Tried the root beer because they suggested it was the best. I did not think so. Will visit again soon.

I think some folks like this place because their food is inexpensive. Their service was good. Their staff was friendly and prompt (keep up the good work Kelly). I gave Schilo's an average score because their food was very ordinary. When you pay $6 for a hamburger in downtown San Antonio, you shouldn't expect much. I also had breakfast there.... More

In its early days downtown San Antonio was very much a German communityand Schilo's is the best existing representation of thoseteutonic roots.a short walk from St. Josephs Catholic Church and the King William neighborhood this restaurant serves xcellent wurst and kraut as well as large icy mugs of root beer. Their split pea soup is outstanding Most of the early... More

I am not root beer fan, but an elderly gentleman in line ahead of me (who said he had been coming here for 70 years!) told me they made the best root beer in the world. I think he was right. It was terrific, as were the German-style deli sandwiches and soups. Great place for lunch, but get there a... More

We stopped there on the way to the Alamo. It was a suggested option by our concierge. The menu gives an historical background of the family who founded the restaurant. It is an interesting story. The breakfast combines the German heritage of the founder with American style choices. Overall the food was very good and the price is great.

I had lived in Germany of 12 years and since returning have been to many restaurants claiming authentic German cuisine. Only Schilos has really delivered. Try the erbsensuppe (split pea soup) or anything else there and you will be hooked.

A must stop on any trip to SA. Although you may have to wait, it is worth it as the food and service is great. Be sure to try the potato pancakes and spicy mustard. (not together though).

Ate there a couple of times while visiting friends. First night had chicken and dumplings and it was tasty. Also had a nice piece of German Chocolate cake that was awesome! Best I have had in a very long time. I wish I would have bought another piece to take home with me. Breakfast there was really good but be... More

We found this little gem by chance walking around the busy Riverwalk and found fast, delicious food served without any pretense. Just really good food.

We had breakfast twice at Schilo's. The first time we both ordered potato pancakes (just like Mom used to make, served with sour cream and applesauce) with sides. The restaurant was really busy but the waitresses were very attentive and the food was good too. We both ate a hearty meal for a price much lower than our hotel's restaurant.... More
