The Esquire Tavern bills itself as the oldest bar on San Antonio's Riverwalk. It certainly has a cool, dark speakeasy vibe going for it. It has tin ceiling tiles, cozy booths, a long wooden bar and vintage looking Edison style light bulbs in the light fixtures. We went there for a bite to eat before heading to a concert next... More

Beautiful tavern atmosphere. Our enthusiastic waiter told us that the Esquire had been open since the day after Prohibition ended! The inside is super cool with Edison-style light bulbs and tin ceilings. The food is also worth a try. We had the fried pickles and the bison burger, which were both excellent. It has a terrace overlooking the Riverwalk, but... More

We were given the name of this restaurant as the place to go for appetizers. We ended up having dinner (yummy empanadas) but the real treat was the fried apple pie. Think Grandma whipping up an apple pie and then putting it in the fryer to crisp up. Add ice cream and it will be a dessert stop you want... More

This place is one of the few places on the river walk that I'd recommend. The menu changes seasonally and the atmosphere and wait staff are friendly and professional. Food is fresh and local. And Tuesday night has a local honky tonk band playing everything from Roy Orbison to chris Issas to popular country. Good times.

The best bison burger I have ever had. Also very good chili salt fries. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Interesting interior and fine beer selection. I wold like to come back to the Esquire. My wife had hanger salad and she like it as well. As mentioned above , not one of the best meals ever, BUT a very... More

Went here for lunch and was in for a treat. The menu offered an excellent choice of twists on the regular sandwiches and burgers you get everywhere. The decor of the bar is outstanding; the server told us that the ornate tin ceiling was original from the 30s, as were most of the other furnishings.

We seldom miss a visit to the Esquire on trips to San Antonio. Accessible from either the Riverwalk or the street, the informed staff and great bar atmosphere make for a "spot on!" bar experience. Be impressed by the sophisticated mixed drinks, great beers and acceptable bar food. When there's music it good and don't miss the chance to tickle... More

Service was not good at all. Burger was soggy. In no rush to return. Sat along the wall because the rail seats were occupied.when one became available, my waitress told me she'd move me but then sat another group there not even 5 minutes after. She didn't hardly even check on me.

We stumbled upon this place by accident whilst wandering San Antonio's famous river walk. What a discovery! Simply put, the best pulled pork sandwich (or sandwich in general) I've ever had! The accompanying chili salt fries were out of this world, complete with homemade ketchup and aioli. The meat literally melted in my mouth, as did the homemade pickles and... More

Being across the river from our hotel and from a friend's recommendation, we decided to go have a few drinks at Esquire Tavern. Earlier in the day, we had learned this is the oldest bar located on the Riverwalk. We couldn't wait to try it! If you ask me, I'd say skip it. Our drinks were between $10-$15 each and... More
