One of the Top 25 Bars in America, The Esquire Tavern opened in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition - a beloved San Antonio watering hole ever since. When it comes to choosing the best Riverwalk bars to spend your time, atmosphere certainly matters. Our legendary establishment is the quintessential downtown bar: dark, cool, redolent with history, and serving cold beer, swanky cocktails, and excellent food. Don't believe us? Step right up and sink your teeth into some handmade SA comfort food including Organic Sirloin Burgers, Crispy Chile Salted Fries, Big Red Empanadas, and Fried Apple Pie with Bourbon Carmel Sauce made from scratch! Now that you trust us a bit more....feel free to stay a while and enjoy hand crafted cocktails using the best of spirits and freshest of juices from the Margarita to the Moscow Mule. Beer lovers, indulge with over 10 Texas/regional brews on tap and enjoy the ice cold bottled beers you love.

Long Bar!

We visited on a day that they served only brunch items. I was a little bummed because I wasn't craving that, but we split "the Elvis" and it was amazing! The drink I had "the Bees Knees" was very original and lovely! We didn't sit at the bar, but it was full and looked fun. Lots of taxidermy... read more

I was thrilled to take my three out of town guests here for great drinks, yummy food and cool ambience. We walked in and it was not too crowded at 6:15pm on a Sunday evening. We walked to the back and saw a few empty tables. I wanted to sit on the outside balcony, and asked the hostess if there... More

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such useful feedback! I've been able to deduce the hostess you spoke with, and will absolutely follow up with her about your experience. While it's true that we have developed processes for efficiently seating our guests, we certainly are not in the business of being 'snippy' while carrying out those processes!... More

While the appetizers where a little underwhelming, the main dishes were excellent - it just took a LONG while to ever see them. I think they suffered from a good Yelp rating during a conference weekend. There were plenty of tables but I think they must have been short on staff in the kitchen. Hard to hit them too hard... Hi there! Thanks so much for your review! While I hate to read that a guest was 'bummed' by our menu offerings, I am glad you enjoy the fare you selected... That brunch was a special occasion indeed- proceeds benefitted the Barman's Fund, which will purchase and donate new goods to Dress for Success San Antonio! We're so glad you... More

Great good, great drinks, great service. Popped in on a weekday afternoon for a late lunch and was blown away. Don't be put off by humble Commerce St entrance - truly great things are waiting inside.

Very good food. The bison burger was the best I ever had. We also had the fish n chips. The fish was fresh and was delicious!

Absolutely loved the Esquire. Went here for brunch on a Sunday and then again for dinner on a Monday. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is old-school and quirky and great. Dessert was a little slow, but overall enjoyed the whole experience.

Walking into the Esquire is like entering another time. Dim bar with hundreds of candles, fancy drinks, and great service. I had a cosmo (my go-to in new places) and it was one of the best i have ever had. Their Moscow mules are also extremely fresh and go down smooth. I wish I lived closer because I would go... More

On a less touristy area of the Riverwalk, can be crowded late nights, happy hours are not too bad. Awesome beer selection, quirky menu, outstanding service, however cocktails touted as "boozy" were small and over priced in my opinion. Small patio over river, not ON the river. Overall great experience!
