Newly reopened in the unique Shaffer Hotel ,Our lunch meals was well prepared & promptly served... While this region is meat & potatoes(or chili) country, the wife's vegetarian "modifications" to the menu were graciously accommodated. The structures "craftsman" decor is always a neat "New mexico" byway treat. We go otta the way for this one ! carracar

I am in Mountainair NM for the winter 2014-15. The Shaffer Hotel and Dining room is closed (again). I do not know what the problem seems to be. I will try to add information as it occurs.

Stopped in for a late lunch on a weekday on our way to Salinas ruins. Wife had beef tacos and I had chicken. Both were fixed the old fashion way - the tortillas were deep fried. Very good. Also had chips and salsa - the salsa was over the top. My wife wanted to just put a spoon in it... More

Have been to Mountainair several times to visit the Salinas ruins. This time we were there at lunch time and decided to try the Shaffer Diner. Visit the diner for the architecture, maybe have a coffee, but skip the food. On the plus side, you do get some very colorful folks coming in as this is cattle country. If you're... More

We ate here while we were visiting the Salinas pueblos, nearby. We had breakfast one morning, lunch on two occasions and dinner one evening. We were not disappointed on at any time. The food was good, the staff was friendly and the decor, primarily Native American, was very interesting.

Read about the hotel a few weeks ago and was looking forward to grabbing a bite to eat here after enjoying a lovely Saturday exploring the area. A neat old building, went in say down and were completely ignored by staff. Finally got up and walked out. Too bad... certainly won't be recommending this charming old hotel to anyone.

On a weekend adventure out of Albuquerque, we took a road trip to the Salinas Pueblo Mission sites of Abo, Auarai, and Gran Quivira. Mid-day we stopped in a TINY town called Mountainair, population of about 1000 people. We chose to eat at the Shaffer Hotel's Dining Room. Our first hint that it would be good was the full parking... My wife and I rode our motorcycles from Albuquerque to Mountainair down old South 14. Great ride with beautiful scenery. Our goal was to have breakfast at Shaffer's. We had not been there before but had heard great things. Both of us had the Rancher Breakfast. Three eggs, four meats, hash browns, pancakes, and toast. Lots of food and very... More

Great place off the beaten path. The diner had very good food and the staff was very friendly. Really enjoyed this place.
