Our owner, Natasha Kalina, was born and raised in Minsk, Belarus, in what was then the Soviet Union. Her parents were both from Ukraine and raised Natasha with a deep respect and love for a huge variety of traditions of local celebrations, home-grown food, and family recipes from many different cultures. Natasha's most cherished memories almost always involve parties at her home, and standing in the kitchen with her mother to help cook for the guests. Cooking was in their DNA. There were never any cookbooks, but everyone always knew how to prepare a variety of recipes that never failed to be perfect in taste, texture, and presentation. Nice. Nice atmosphere. Clean with a old home style. Such as individual tea cups and side plates. Had the hot borscht, vareniki and chicken Kiev with dill potatoes. Along with hibiscus tea. The vareniki was nice and tender. What a nice treat. Potatoes were delicious. The chicken Kiev was ok. The hot borscht was good. Not overwhelming. But good. Service... More

I dined at Kalina last night with my wife and four friends who all like food and are decently well-traveled. It was the first time for all of us, as w live in NW Tucson, and Kalina is on the east side - over 15 miles from our homes. The restaurant is tucked into a nondescript strip mall, but once... More

The best thing about this place is that Russian cuisine is rare, but the food is average, at best. Their 2 signature entrees were Beef Stroganoff and Chicken Kiev. The Stroganoff was made with hamburger meat (it should be solid chunks of a decent steak) and wasn't any better than you'd get in a diner back East. The Chicken Kiev... More

We ate here on a Wednesday night in February. We chose mid-week so the people in our party could engage in conversation over dinner. The food was fantastic, two appetizers, four entrees and three drinks was only $125. Don't let the location in a strip mall fool you, this is a quality restaurant with nice amenities and a friendly helpful... More

If you want a change from the very common Italian and Mexican restaurants, I strongly suggest you try Kalina's. My wife and I went there the other day and because it was our first time there, we chose the fixed menus #1 and #2. There was way too much food for us to eat, so we really had some of... More

In our travels we always look for different ethnic restaurants in the various cities we visit. While in Tucson we decided to visit Kalina. I come from an Ukrainian background and I miss the different dishes I ate while growing up. I had the potato/mushroom vareniki which were scrumptious. My husband had the beef stroganoff which he said was excellent.... More

We have had Ukrainian/Russian food several times. Kalina's food is very high quality with some inventive twists. This is the real deal. Several unusual E. European vodka's and beers on the menu. Chef/owner and her pianist mother are a delight. Well worth the trip to the off-the-beaten-path location for a change from the typical Tucson SW fare.

My husband and I live in NE Tucson and noticed a semi-new Russian restaurant in the shopping center near Tanque Verde and Bear Canyon. We tried it on his birthday and were extremely impressed with food, service and ambiance. I had the Vodka steak and he had Chicken Kiev. Everything was delicious and the value for money excellent. Our server... More

What a gem this is! Ukrainian food at it's most authentic, and the owners are the nicest, friendliest people you could hope to have as hosts. We had a wonderful meal, some amazing caviar, traditional soups, stroganoff and chicken kiev, plus two marvelous deserts, the traditional cherry dumplings with sour cream were delish, and I didn't get a look in...
