While traveling on a road trip we passed through Tucson. Since it was lunch time we decided we wanted some authentic Mexican food and decided on El Charro Cafe. This restaurant is close to downtown in a converted house. (It has been in business since 1922) We liked the quaint, old, rustic decor. My husband & I both ordered the... More

We were looking for something unique and stumbled up El Charro Cafe, we arrived about 9PM on a Friday night and there was a short wait, shorter than they told us it'd be. Our table was in what was once a house and had a beautiful interior. The service was excellent, I had the chicken mole and it was wonderfully... More

This is the real deal. Great old house with lots of charm and lots to see in it. Each room has something different in it. Big menu with lots of choices and unusual preparations. A must is their guacamole. Fantastic with hot chips and also their homemade salsas.Chose the Bandera Trio a tamale with green chiles , cream rice, also... More

Sat outside on a perfect Tucson afternoon. Cheerful waitress promptly brought water and chips and salsa and menu selections. We both enjoyed the ceviche salad with fresh shrimp and guacamole and tortilla soup. Tasty and well presented. Will definitely return.

The ambiance felt like that of a Mexican inspired Bennigan's. There was dark wood all around. Large replicas of memorabilia were hung on the walls that appeared to date back to the early days of the restaurant. While we were told this was one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. Perhaps we made poor choices or perhaps they... More

Went later in the evening after a number of meetings - enjoyed the guacamole, the Margarita's and especially the Fish Tacos. Well prepared - grilled fish, nice sauce and tender and moist. Our server was efficient and helpful. I would return in a heart beat.

At one time these guys had some of the best carne seca in town ...But no more......The decor is still funky and cool and the service efficient but the food was nothing like I remember it...The famous carne seca, once one of the premier plates is now a joke....As they used to say" Where's the beef?" I literally had to... More

Oldest family owned Mexican food restaurant in the United States. Marcus is one of the brothers who owns the restaurant and knows how to treat people. Ask him to suggest a tequila. The patio is sweet. Causal and delicious

We had read gret things about El Charro and visited there the first Sunday in October for lunch. Ample seating so we were seated right away but at a table next to the door where the servers came through with drink orders. Chips and salsa were sub-par. We ordered the carne seca, which they are know for and split an... More

Getting a meal like this for $9.95 surprised me. El Charro has a great reputation, and their original location in the El Presidio neighborhood -- which also includes the excellent Tucson Museum of Art -- made me wonder whether I'd be paying a premium. (There are other El Charro locations in Tucson. I had an delicious dinner at a couple... More
