Had an early dinner and was delighted with the service, food, ambiance and price. Highly recommend reservations as the place seems to be pretty busy. Our server, John, was attentive and sweet. The food was fabulous and a visit from the chef at the end of the meal was welcome reminder of days gone by. Definitely will return!

This is where you go in Providence when you want a real old fashioned Italian meal. Everything taste home made, there are many wonderful choices on the menu, and the service is outstanding. You can get a full course meal at very reasonable prices. My favorite the Osso Buco! My wife and I always know we can count on the... More

For a party of 12, the Old Canteen provided great service and food. It seemed as though everyone enjoyed themselves. The restaurant was very accommodating. The bill was very reasonable for a large party. The only con was that it was somewhat cramped for space. Other restaurants may come and go on the hill, but the Old Canteen is a... More

It was my son's 16th Birthday and he wanted to go to the Old Canteen. We hadn't been there in awhile. Made a reservation, due to the numerous college graduations that weekend. They called the morning of the reservation to confirm. Upon arrival we were seated promptly. The owner/chef came out to talk to us at the table. The waitress... More

I read many of the reviews raving about the cuisine that the old canteen has to offer, and wanted to give it a chance. Can't speak much for the entire menu, though the lunch specials are affordable and generous. Getting a three course meal for 12-13 dollars is a novel idea in this day and age, however, the food itself... More

Friends wanted to lunch at The Old Canteen. A Providence "Landmark" if there ever was one in the restaurant world. It's in Federal Hill, which is a landmark in itself with all the great Italian restaurants located there. I was skeptical because it is an upscale restaurant and I didn't want to pay a lot for lunch. Well, The Old... More

Sal the owner was greeting old friends and making new ones. Very outgoing and concerned with how the customers are doing. Food was very well prepared. Clams with garlic and white wine is not a complex dish to make, but the Canteen got it right. Fish was great. Service professional . Has its own lot which is a big plus... More

The food was good not great and the service adequate. The decor is a little tired. Their advertising says "veal you cut with a fork". I had the veal and I had to use a knife. The server asked if I wanted another drink and then forgot to bring the drink. One nice touch was that he owner came by... More
